I suspect it is cheaper to pay out this way than run council houses
The costs(to the taxpayer) with the council property is not the rents but the maintenance
ATM they pay the private LT job done.
Same issue for housing associations their biggest problem is bad tenants and the cost of evictions and fixing up places. IN our town one of the ig ones owns properties all over the town not just the social housing special builds.
Itis a problem for the people that work for the housing association because a few areas are no go for them living there if they have properties.0 -
Problem with that not enough council houses
A council house rented out at below market rate is just as costly to the local taxpayer as paying full market rate on a private rental via housing benefit...or possibly even more costly as the council can reclaim the HB from central gov whereas loss of rent on the council property is the councils loss.I think....0 -
Councils are having to work with private landlords more for volume than for cost - but it's a balanced relationship. In many cases, the Housing Benefit allowance is lower than the market rent, but for vulnerable tenants, the Council will pay the rent directly to the landlord, underwriting it and also underwriting for damage, too.
The advantage for the tenant is no bedroom tax, and a landlord who is probably more flexible and more diligent than a public authority might be.0 -

The housing market is so messed up most people do not realise. This thread is arguing one aspect to death without taking everything into consideration:
1) house prices and house value to local wages vary widly across the country
2) many areas have very high house prices compared to the youngsters wage and many have no chance to buy their home for the foreseeable future
3) social housing has been in decline for a while and still dropping
4) we haven't been building enough houses to accommodate the rising population and the changing demographic
5) privately rented properties are on the increase, and being actively encouraged by government policy
6) house price inflation is being encouraged by government policy
7) investment in residential property by non UK people and companies has been happening in our high demand low supply housing market. If we don't have enough homes why are we allowing non UK residents to purchase them?
8) there is no sign of the housing market correcting itself for the foreseeable future
I'm sure there are more problems!
If the current situation persists with young people not able to purchase their home, we are stealing our youngs future prosperity and condemning them to a life of renting and poverty in old age.Peace.0
