This is the first year ever in my life I have not gone mad in the sales.

All I have bought is a new pair of work shoes x 2 for ten pounds each and a pair of work trousers for ten also.
I am actually saving money regularly which although not loads is still a good feeling.

My goal next year is to have a decent emergency fund and to shop completely in charity shops for things I need.

I came home from m and s just now with a turkey crown for £60!!!!!!! reduced to 5.00. will do me loads of meals as I have portioned it up.

Feel really pleased with my not buying it this year, I have still given in and treated myself to things here and there but since reading this thread I have drastically cut down from my old habits :)

Had a craving for fruit today which is odd as not wanted any for weeks so haven't been buying it

anyway called into co-op on the way home and managed to get:

punnet of plums YS to 29p
box of easy peel oranges YS to 79p
a pack of 12 stuffing balls reduced from £3.79 :eek:to 79p (which will be used on New Year's Day!)

I'm not taking my purse out of the house for the remainder of the week! :rotfl:

Well done on the turkey crown Chella, we had a boneless breast from m&s on Christmas Day and it was delicious.
I have read along all year and am hoping to join in more this year. I too have a son going to university in September and another going into his second year. It's going to be a struggle so we need to save as much as we can.
Looking forward to getting to know you all in 2016.

  • I shall eat a few today with my dinner but I think the rest will be frozen as you say ricardaracoon, seems sensible and they don't really need blanching ,just must find a small space in my freezer somehow. No shopping is going to be done at all I think at the moment as I do have far too much stuff already in stock.
Operation belt tightening will start as of today.lots of menu planning around what I have indoors and very little shopping bought until my food mountain gets to more of a small hill I think :):):)
Onwards and upwards chums Happy New Year to one and all, in case I don't get a chance before tomorrow night

  • G'day,

So I've made a start with the not buying the wants by deleting all shopping apps such as Amazon, Groupon, EBay etc off my phone and tablet as well as unsubscribing from all emails such as John Lewis etc when they come through. It feels quite cathartic!

My other big expense is races, I run a lot of marathons a year but at £35+ a time it soon adds up and can easily go down the drain if I'm injured. I've already entered quite a few for 2016 so they will stand but my rule is, if I've not entered it by tomorrow night then I can't enter at all. That's going to be quite a challenge as I do love them but a huge money saver!!

Can I ask what the abbreviation YS is that I've seen on here to do with reduced food (sorry if I'm being thick!)?

    Have a great day :-)
  • YS = Yellow Sticker - when the supermarket reduces prices they put a yellow sticker on with the new (hopefully ridiculously) lower price!

and you can run a marathon.......WOW.
    Nevertheless she persisted.
  • D'oh - yellow sticker of course!! I wouldn't be too impressed with me running marathons, I've been overtaken by sloths...!!
  • The weather has been so awful over Christmas and my heart goes out to everyone who has been affected by the floods. It's been so tempting to head to the shops as the weather has meant that our other leisure pursuit walking has been out of the question most days. We did manage a lovely, if wet walk on the day after Boxing Day.
I have had a wander around the sales but quite honestly there was nothing I needed. I bought a couple of candles and some chocolates to put away for gifts. Tomorrow we will be using Tesco Clubcard points to pay for a family meal out before my son heads back to uni on Saturday.
All in all a lovely Christmas and proof that you don't have to spend pots of money to enjoy family times together.

:p I accidentally ended up in a department store today. I thought I was going to a garden centre and had to wade through multiple departments of every kind of consumer durable you could imagine to get to the bit out the back where there were a few pitiful looking pots being blown about.

£8.99 for a twiggy little fruitbush?! I should ruddy co-co. I know how to grow fruitbushes - most of them will generate a new plant from a cut-off twig stuck in the ground. The hell I'm paying that kind of money. I shall get some from the poundstore or another cheapy source.

Looked at all the other Stuff and bethought myself I wouldn't take most of it away on a bet, never mind handover my hard-earned. I think my shopping muscle is permanantly strained and unusable......
Every increased possession loads us with a new weariness.
