Well I survived the trip out on my own and it was fab!

Not only did I spend the day on my own I also had to navigate myself through a new train station as the one I would normally use was closed for renovations...ended up at the main interchange which I've never stepped foot in for about 35 years!

When I think about this its pretty silly that I'm worried about doing something on my own, after all I've lived by myself for 21 years and I have do everything else by myself so why not a day out?

I also have this plan in my head that when my mortgage is repaid I'm going to start travelling, I want to see the Great Wall of China, I want to do the transiberian to Russia train (Joanna Lumley is doing a program on TV about it), take a world cruise etc

If the gods are on my side I'll be mortgage free by time I'm 50 (9years)...unless something changes in those 9 years then I'm going to be doing that travelling in my own! :rotfl:

So like Lyn says I've decided to do more stuff on my own....I'm on holiday from work for 2 weeks in August, I always take a day out with mum so last night I booked train tickets to York for us both....I also booked 1 ticket to Edinburgh for me :D Fringe Festival is on so I can wander round all the artists for a few hours

There's also a museum about 15 mile away that I keep saying I want to go to as haven't been there since I went with the school, 30+ years ago, next time the weather is poor on a weekend I'm taking myself off there! it won't cost as my travel pass will cover me and museum entry is free :D

    Hi pm

I'm glad you had a fab day yesterday.

I don't think it's silly being worried about doing things on your own. I think there are loads of good reasons you can tell yourself to not do it. Your plans for your holiday sound fab. If you haven't been before the Edinburgh fringe is great. hopefully by the time you start travelling people will be more accepting and less judgemental of people doing things alone. I've heard some horrible stories ( including some I've read on here) about how people eating/drinking and travelling alone are treated. Maybe others will stop projecting their own insecurities onto singlies and people won't think twice about doing things alone!

  • Morning everyone

Bright and sunny here and less than 20°C which is a treat after so many hot days. I like summer far better like that and am right now sitting here with socks and a cardigan and quite enjoying the feeling of being cosy instead of being sweathy and hot.

Was out with two friends yesterday, went to an Italian restaurant, then on to a friends place for tea and watching some silly videos and back home on the last bus so that my friend didn't had to drive me home.
Afternoon yesterday was spent at my parents place, had to help my mum with some computer stuff - she is doing online banking for the first time in her life... - and then we played the German version of Ludo like maniacs. My mum had splashed out quite some cash on a fancy board and already played at least 10 rounds in the past few days... I think that is money well spent and we all like playing on the one much more than on the normal, small boards.

Today I'll have a lazy day, might go for a walk later on and for now will just sit and stitch and watch a DVD and drink some tea...

Suki, I'm sure your grandson will learn loads about cooking and food and will also value food because he knows that potatos have to be digged out and that milk comes from a cow and not from the bottle in the supermarket. (And yes, I really had to take some kids I was babysitting to a farm once to show them that milk comes from cows...)

Weemidgie, I second your opinion at not wasting meat as an animal had to die cause of it. I sometimes have to throw out some veg or some left over pasta or whatever, but would never waste meat. And when I eat out and know that I won't be able to eat up my whole meal I will eat up the meat first so that it isn't going into the bin.

Lyn, I should also start to see losing weight as decluttering... Would maybe make me more determined to do so....

pm Well done on deciding to do things on your own!

jackie, I had a good laugh about you helping your GSs to declutter... I had a friend who would always call his granddad for help when he had to tidy up. His granddad just had to sit on the bed and tell him what to tidy up because he just never knew where he should start...
Chickpeas apparently can be used for vegetarian chicken salad. You could use them for something like coronation chicken. Or put them in a curry?

    Have a nice day everyone!

Well yesterday wasn't a NBI day but I was really pleased with myself - I did a food shop and only bought what was on the list :j

OK I did leave myself a bit of leeway by putting very generic things on the list, but it is a definite improvement to usual.

I had just put 'meat' on the list as I hadn't a clue what I wanted to eat as the weather here has been so hot and draining. Also, unusually for me as I usually avoid the Saturday shopping, I had to be out so called into L!dl as well and bagged a couple of bargains.

Here in France they don't do much in the way of YS so you have to look out for offers that are real offers IYKWIM. While wandering round I spied some chicken livers - dirt cheap in the UK but getting on for a luxury here  Price was better than the supermarkets so I picked up a couple of pots. There were also pork loin joints which I find the cheaper to buy and slice myself than buy the pre-sliced loin steaks. When I got to the till I found they were on their Saturday offer list so I got 30% off. :j

So this morning after a brunch of chicken livers and scrambled eggs, all remaining livers are cleaned, chopped, bagged and portioned and residing in the freezer. The pork has been sliced, divided into 2 lots and is marinading in 2 different flavours, (hot basil for 1 and sweet chilli for the other, both bottles which need using up) and are in the fridge for today before being portioned and frozen. :)

Spent a little more than I thought I would, but having portioned out the meals I have enough for a couple of weeks so in reality it was a cheap shop :T

After a lovely morning and early afternoon in which I managed to get my bedding and towels washed and line dried, and all the weeding done, the weather turned nasty.

Has rained non stop since 4pm and no let up in sight :(

Have used up 2 sausages and some mash from the freezer for tea.

Have also made a vat of yellow split pea soup in the slowcooker for work lunches, didn't have any ham so used some smoked lardons from the freezer :j only thing is I soaked too many peas so will be making another batch later in the week.

I've had a lingering headache all day, not sure why, but paracetamol not helping, will be going to bed soon to see if I can sleep it off...in my nice clean sheets :D

    Ahoy there

Well done Pm2326 for having a great day on your own and planning some more - the Great Wall of China is indeed something to aim for!!! I am not sure I would go that far - feel you are very brave! Also well done on the busy day - you may well be suffering a headache because of the the change in the weather and the air pressure - I often get a head ache when this happens. Plus when it is going to rain my arthritis plays up like billio! My ex boss used to say 'We wont bother with a bit of seaweed to tell what the weather is going to do - instead we'll just hang Lyn out of the window!' :rotfl: He was younger than me but one of the best, most fun and fantastic people I have ever had the privilege of working with (he would be cross if I said 'work for' :-))

DNd - looks as if you have 'future proofed' your meals for a while - bizzarely it is a form of NBI cos you will not be buying it in the future!!:rotfl:

Ricarda - German board for Ludo??????????? I am intreguged! I love board games - dyslexia prevents me enjoying scrabble (very frustrating!! You guys have no idea how often I use the spell check on here - and still miss words!). Monopoly and the game devised from Terry Prachett's Discworld novels are especial favourites! :D

Had a quiet day today - treating myself to my weekend treat - bacon sanis! Yum yum!! Then returned to Sl!min World ways and enjoyed that. Then my personal furry trainer (i.e. the dog :rotfl: ) took me out for my hours walkies while it stopped raining for a bit! Also dead headed roses and got round to some writing. Again a very contented day - little things eh?? :)
    Oh btw an NSD again!
More tomorrow!! Sail frugally onward folks!

Pm26 Well done that lady for getting out and about. I adore my family and we even go on holiday together ,but I also like to do my own thing at times, and on holiday will sometimes just take myself off for a day out. In a few weeks time we are all off to the IoW for a fortnight, but at some point I will go walkabout ,maybe to Newport for a potter, or off to Freshwater (one of my favourite places to wander) ,not much there ( tiny little hairdressers that cuts beautifully ), or even for a wander up Tennyson Down .

Quite a trek but amazing views. The younger boys love going to Blackgang for the day,but I've been there so many times and crowds of people are not really my thing. A nice meander round some CS and a decent cuppa and scone is a perfect day out for me on holiday sometimes.

I love our trips to the beach and picnics etc but I also like to just wander and take my time and just look at things .Life is often such a rush and you miss silly things buy hurrying.:)

Tomorrow morning the local cinema has a 'crinkly day' where for £3.00 you get a film and a cuppa and a biscuit if you are a certain age ...I definitely qualify. So DGS Ben is watching the boys don't murder each other and I'm off to see Child 44 which I read last year. Being on my own doesn't bother me, and if folk have a problem then its their problem and not mine .

So you go and walk the Great Wall of China, I envy you I just don't have the time to do it, but I can see the idea having appeal.

I too would love to do that train journey as it looks facinating.Brilliant show isn't it.She is far more interesting a character than a lot of travel people isn't she.

Today more mundane happenings ,off to the dentists with three small boys for their annual check up this afternoon. But NBI this week at all as I'm hanging on to my purse and saving the extra cash towards our holidays
Have a great and frugal day chums
    JackieO xx
  • Lyn, well, it is basically Ludo but the Swiss version of it. I said German last time but looked it up now, their version is closer to Ludo, while the Swiss version has about twice as many fields and different rules from both Ludo and the German version. For example you need a five instead of a six to get started and when you have a six you can move forward 12 fields and dice again, but if you have 3*6 all your tokens go back to start - which happened to me 4 times in one game on Saturday...!

    Heaving to!

Firstly - thanks for that Riccarda - when I have few pennies I may well look out for that one! Sounds fun!
Jackie O - I am now of an age where I too can do crinkly film days, however they seem to have restricted stuff on and round my way seem to think all we mature folk want are romcoms or mock Bond movies - the idea that we may have a brain and want something where we have to think a bit is probably a bit scary for them. Onward the Grey revolution!!!! :D

Have fallen off the NBI and dieting ships today - simultaneously! Giant splashes in the water - probably causing tidal waves somewhere! Went to the local village shop today with all good intentions - just to buy milk! but there from the local bakery were scones and strategically placed nearby (yes - great sales technique for which I fell hook line and sinker!! :o ) the local farm's clotted cream (which is wonderful!) and then Tiptree strawberry jam! Did I walk nobly by and resist - did I Hades! Ooooooh but they were soooo nice!! I have only had 3 treats since I have been down here - one ice cream - one slice of lime and coconut cake - and now have 4 scones, jam and cream to eat up :( Doing all this walking and then undoing the good work!! Typical!!

Haul me back on board shipmates with wise words! Please! :A

Oh Lyn you are on holiday, and a very clever marketer, unless there is someone among us who does not like clotted cream I don't think any of us could have resisted.

By tea time tomorrow I think we will all have been wishing we were with you.
