Well my day is planed, been and picked cherries this morning, so jam making is on the book's, assorted fruit of the garden will be turned into a crumble and I need to do a cake for sweet treat, apart from that, weather permiting it's just a bit of gardening and knitting planed, so that should keep me on the straight and narrow.

No cooking today for me as its RFL day today and I am up early as I am going to have some porridge for breakfast to keep me going while doing the Race,or in my case wobbly walk :)
My DGS Mikey will carry my water bottles, and probably some bananas for energy :) tonight I'll probably have sore feet but that is nothing as they will recover, lots of people won't recover from this awful disease which touches every family in the land
So its onwards and upwards chums
Cheers to everyone who has donated and Thank you all so much

:T Good for you, Jackie0, and have a great day.

Umm, can I hold my hand up to 2014 veg still in my mini freezer as 2015 veg is needing to go in? Have a lot of broad beans havested on Thurs evening in there now, and will be doing the blackcurrants and more broad beans today. Call it a day of Heavy Shelling. And there are still some runner beans and a few bagged individual portions of leeks in there.

:o A tad embarrassing, but it's so hard to calculate exactly what you need and you can never count on getting exactly what you need out any given quantitiy of sowing. I'm looking at a bumper crop of both red and white onions this year, the tops have just started to die off. I will be more realistic about what I can use myself (I only sow one pkt of each, £land sets) and gift the excess away at harvest time to family and friends, when they're in prime condition.

I have also had a couple more items step forward and surrender themselves from the stash, and they can go soon. One is a book which sells for £20+ so will get kid bruv the online bookseller to handle that.

Was at a party yestereve and chatting with several van-dwelling hippie types who confessed themselves baffled when they'd moved, briefly, into bricks and mortar. As in, your entire belongings sit in one corner of one room and you still have everything you need, and what the heck is all this extra space for? Oh, that'll be so you can do 2-3 times more paid work than you normally have to do, and end up poorer.:p

Plus have seen some gorgeous pix of their living vans and am suffering from van-envy, lol.

    Morning all,

My sister was at an A*da supermarket recently at the ys reduction time. This was a 1 off - not her normal supermarket shop or time of day. The ys section was surrounded by a group of customers who had trollies and arms full of ys food. But the ys food was going to be reduced again - at 7pm. The customers actually wait for staff to come along, hand over their items to be reduced again and toddle off. My sister happened to spot a cake and asked the staff member if it was reduced - and it was. She said the look from the crowd of 'ys' customers was scary. Staff told her this ritual happened every night by the same group of people!

Just wondering if those of you with excess produce in freezers would consider donating to charities, groups you consider worthwhile causes. Homeless centres, Womens aid, church groups, mother and toddlers groups, older peoples housing association areas etc. Know the NBI ship is about saving and not spending, but maybe reducing the hold weight and helping other fledling nbi areas would be a nice thing to do? Not preaching at you all, just asking :)

Have realised I have only spent £8 this summer on clothes....a long sleeved t shirt, and a short sleeved t shirt. And I still have more than enough. Thanks to this thread for helping me see a different view of the horizon.

JackieO Have a fab day, enjoy, take your time and well done for getting up and doing it:T:T:T

I too have broad beans from last year in the freezer, and runners, but I don't like them and tend to bypass them when cooking lol

We only grow them cos mum likes them But I think she went OTT this year and put in about a dozen plants

We still haven't harvested a thing from the garden :( Like I say the weather has been against us all year. We got hit hard by a late frost so all the onions are shooting and although will be edible we wont get stores. After a week of sunshine its been rain and wind since. Broad beans are just beginning to develop, peas are just flowering, same as the toms. Courgettes, well who knows, we are getting flowers, but nothing developing as yet. Lettuce and spring onions will be ready in a week or two fingers crossed, followed by the cabbage and beets. Carrots, parsnips, sprouts will come in their own sweet time. And the spuds should be ready - but aren't. Perhaps time the chooks start to lay Ill have enough from the garden to seen a reduction in shopping bills :)

Was reading an article in yesterdays paper about how we are putting ourselves in danger trusting our eyes and noses to tell if food is ok to eat, rather then being guided by the use by dates. Well Im not swayed, my eyes and nose have got me to this age and I will carry on trusting them. There again I use so little processed food stuffs. Odd packet of ham, cheese and sausages and the usual jars like mayo and pickles. Also changing back to butter and whole milk means theres been very little messing about with the product before I use it

I think Im going to have to leave this thread and move to the MM&M thread as Ive not really been not spending. Yes Im more conscience of my spending but the money still seems to fly out all the same. This weekend we have been babysitting the grandkids for example, so an extra £20 in diesel, money for indoor play area ( its tipped it down all weekend), a well needed coffee for me whilst there, slushes for the kiddies - all mounting up

Still dinner for the 7 of us is a £1 chicken from the factory outlet and grandson will make cookies which we will have with ice-cream for pud so all is not lost

Right away to clear up the loo roll grand daughter has just trailed around the house, will gather it and save it for use when we are back home alone lol

    Smooth waters everyone xx

Suki - I think the NBI is about not buying all the carp they want us to buy and spending money on what we really want to do eg doing things with grandkids. Have had a very expensive few weeks paying for holidays which are treats promised to individual grandchildren. We took three of them away on their own last year for special things they wanted to do.

Need to cutback more on food but rarely waste anything these days even veg goes to make stock and soup. Had to buy a new car as needed an automatic following DHs leg problems but at least we were able to pay for it.

I've just did a little tidying round around the basement as it looked stuffed. Well, it actually wasn't... Just a lot of things that need to go somewhere as soon I get a change; paper to recycling (which I forgot to put out for the last collection, so it'll be three weeks till I can get rid of it) and two bags of clothes for charity. Plus I filled a whole box with books for next years book exchange, but put them in a corner where they're not getting in the way

I tried on the three rediscovered skirts. One fits perfectly, one is a bit tight, but will fit once I've lost a few lbs and the third fits but makes me look even bigger than I am, so that was added to the donation-pile in my basement.

Jackie, good luck with your run/walk! Enjoy it!

Suki, I think NBI isn't about not spending at all but more about "mindful buying/spending" Money spent on trips with loved ones, a treat for someone (or yourself) or things you need or really want is far better spent then when you just go and buy crap.

I sometimes too feel that I'm not really fitting in here as I do buy quite a lot things, but then I look back on what I bought say three years ago. Plus I started a spreadsheet last year where I write down everyting I bought in terms of clothes, cosmetics and things for myself like books, yarn... I highlight all the things I really liked in green, mispurchases in red and the rest stays white. White things are mostly things I had to have and don't have a specific opinion on them like when I have to replace my jeans or when I buy facecream...
I'm very proud to say that each and every spending of Mai 2015 is green!

Dinner today is pasta with a sauce made of a sausage, carrots, celery and canned tomatos. Only had to buy the veggies for that, rest comes from stock.

Have a nice day everyone! I'll go back to my cross stitching.

Hi gang fantastic day and although my 'dogs are barking' (sore feet )we enjoyed every minute of it DGS Mikey had been poorly last night so had to stay at home with his Dad, but the other three boys Ben,Jack and Henry came along and kept us going .

I walked the last 1k in my bare feet as my shoes were begining to hurt but on the grass it was lovely and cool.Very warm walking so DD poured some water over my head to cool me down :):):) I didn't even mind that though. We had a great lot of ladies around us and we were all singing at one point:)

I am so pleased to have done it, and we are hoping, God and my feet willing, :) to do it again next year.

In total we raised between the two of us £447.00 including gift aid.Heart FM were there pumping out the music to get everyone dancing. Our time was one hour thirteen minutes and we wern't the last over the line. The boys all gave both Tess and I a big hug and I was just so glad to be able to do something towards helping someone else survive.Thank chums for all your good wishes and donations we couldn't have done it without the great support we have had
Feet up, and lots of cups tea now
    Cheers chums

I spy good times ahead me hearties!!

Jackie O you are just brilliant and such an inspiration!!! Well done! :T :A

Suki - I am on both threads!! I think NBI is about not being conned into thoughtless buying just because... (agreeing with Ricarda here) The idea is to spend money on what WE want to not what we are being conned into - whatever your budget! :) Some of us will have more than others - thats life - but in no way should you feel that you are not welcome on here mate! :A

So I send v little on food or power but I spend, instead, on going out with friends (including a pub crawl - which many folk would find a complete waste of money!). but that is MY choice of where I want to spend my dosh.

I used to be conned - and if I lurk round our City Centre (Milton Keynes) I still can be - into buying clothes I dont need/coffees with cakes/really expensive choccys (I dont need these as I am trying to loose weight!)/new films/make up (I ve got a drawer full!)/magasines. The whole of the City Centre is set up and has been specially designed to part you from your cash!! Serious psychological studies have been done before the more modern 'Mall' style shopping centres were built! For example - have you noticed that you cannot see outside of most of them??? If you meet a friend - you tend to say 'I ll meet you by ABIGNAME STORE' Because they are all you see you mind is tricked into only observing those big stores so you cant think about going for a walk in the countryside (free) or how lovely the (free) sunshine is when you are in there.

TBH - it still works on me sometimes! :o Especially with Hotel choco!at!

My chosen spend is on going out with friends and treating my family - being on here has helped me to focus on where I really
want my money to go and enabled me to cut down on boring expenses such as power/bank charges/basic foods and thoughtless expenditure on stuff I dont need! Your chosen expenditure might be different - garden/ foods/ clothes/ grandchildren/ holidays!

Whatever you choose I can respect that!

So stay and/or lurk or go on 2 threads - the more the merrier!
Cheers ship mates - lets all pull together!

  • Evening everyone

I did survived long Monday at work, don't like it too much as it is a really long day to start with... But for the rest of the week it is closing at half past four and normally I'm out of the office by quarter to five as I'm one of the first ones to start work...

Jackie, very well done on completing the race! HOpe your feet will recover soon!

Lyn, you should see the mall near where I live, it is rubbish and you certainly don't want to spend money in there... The good shops have closed and now we only have the ones left that can be found in every highstreet, so there are about five more of them less than 10 miles away... I basically just go there when I know that I need something, but would not think of spending an afternoon there, browsing the shops. I think the only customers they still have that can be tempted to buy rubbish are teenagers... But strangely they have a few very good restaurants in there, so sometimes my sister and I go there for lunch on a Saturday and might browse the book shop, which is the only decent shop left (besides the crafting departement of the departement store)

I found that our local supermarket sells organic milk in 250ml packs. I never manage to empty a pint of milk, so a lot of it goes down the drain and I might save money when I buy the smaller packs, although they're more expensive par liter.... Plus it is organic, so win-win I would say...

Very well said Lyn that we all have different priorities and we can fund the things we want by saving in other parts.

So, back to my cross stitching. Found some Music While you Work recordings on youtube, so that will be what I'm listening to while I stitch. I love old fashioned music and old TV series and I think they go very well with old fashioned stuff like knitting, stitching or sewing (since my sewing machine is 60 years old sewing certainly is an old fashioned thing for me...)

    have a nice evening everyone!
