Electric use.my family is trained to switch off lights and not fill the kettle but my beef is with stuff on standby Mr V couldn't understand why his programme recording sometimes failed ,it was me switching the telly off at the wall when I went to bed:o.Why is there a clock on every mortal thing too? and little lights everywhere on stuff.
I've got two little energy consumption monitors, one which shows me the total amount I'm using and another one which I can plug in to individual appliances to see what they're using. I can understand things with clocks and little lights using a small amount of energy, but I can't for the life of me work out why my washing machine draws power even when it's completely off - there's no clock or operating light. What's in it that's using power?! I also switch almost everything off at the wall socket when I'm not using it except things like the phone, fridge and freezer.Above all, I have been a sentient being, a thinking animal, on this beautiful planet, and that in itself has been an enormous privilege and adventure.Oliver Sachs 20150 -

This is why my utility room has a panel with all the appliance switches on as well as the lights. It makes it easy to turn them off at the mains when not in use. If the switches are behind the appliance, on the socket, you can't switch them on and off easily. I do get lazy about it at times (anything with a light is switched off at they annoy me), so thanks for the reminder!0 -
The only things left on in my house is my fridge and freezer...its a habit now, kettle, microwave, Slowcooker, halogen oven, washer all unplugged at mains when no longer needed, hot water and heating is switched off via the boiler when I go out, go to bed or water is hot enough.
I would also recommend people check the temperature of their hot water, I was able to turn temperature down quite a few degrees without noticing the difference, saves loads as quicker to heat.
I've been with e*n for last 3 years and dual fuel is £40 a month for 2 bedroom house, can't get cheaper elsewhere. Heating never goes above 15 and only gets used between November and March (hoping it will be switched off by next weekend)0 -
Am I the only one who loves calculating the savings made since starting NBI?
£450 towards holiday
- from putting away the usual amounts for council tax, water, BT sport, lottery etc - not paid in Jan and Feb
£125 extra in bank account
£575 extra saved over January and February which is 23% of our overall home budget!!!!!!23% saved from budget
All done through mindful spending
Admittedly, it won't be so great over the next few months but I have found it really helpful to record all spending and check the bank account every day. It is making me realise just how much money disappeared without making a positive impact on usDon't get it perfect - Get it goingBetter Than Before0 -

I dont calculate my savings as such, I just look at what I've paid off, for instance since 1 jan I've paid off a £1450 credit card balance and £81 off the mortgage. Had I not stopped buying things I wouldn't have done this0 -
Had a nice ocular migraine at work today. Not nice when you're on your own and can't see properly!
Spent £10.87 yesterday getting food for work, then £1 today on sanitary towels. I was actually quite pleased cos when I went up to the counter they scanned as £1.55. Turns out they put the entire line in the wrong place on the shelf so they only charged me £1 for it.0 -
Since joining this thread:-
We only spend £50pw on grocery shopping whereas before NBI we would of spent £75pw. Now we think twice before putting any food in our trolley. So have saved £160 on that!! We have decluttered our clothes rails and drawers twice and have made £250 on e*ay sales. Have taken 2 black sacks of nice bits and bobs to the local hospice charity shop.
Think more about when clothes that have been worn need washing. Can it be worn another day??? yes it can!!!
Stopped wasting money buying CHEESE flavoured
crisps!! Thanks to one of our shipmates!!
Made lovely new friends!!
Are we glad we joined???? YES WE ARE!!! :T
Three cheers for Captain Slowdown

Still trying to declutter and resist buying more things to be brought into the flat. Had to buy a new work handbag, so used vouchers to buy that. Am trying to use up the many toiletries in the flat, so made a list of what I have and when I used them, crossing them off on the list. Took some bits to the recycling centre this week and got binned some other bits yesterday. Got a bag of things to take to the cs hopefully soon. Am hoping to get to a good state of mind with the clutter and a near clutter free flat this year.Frugal Living Challenge 2025 Mortgage free as of 1st August 20130
