  • Evening everyone!!
We've been good here, spending on things we NEED, not things we needlessly WANT.
It seems like there have been lots of you lovely people trying to justify what you've spent, such as on a new cardigan that was a bargain and from a good brand. My logic is, if the item you want is a QUALITY item and you'll get plenty of use out of it, then in the log run its a good investment!
I remember when I used to go to Pr!mark in Manchester (when there wasnt one near where I lived) and I used to spend nearly £100 on clothes I would get bored of in a couple of months, so just got rid. Not value for money!
I now tend to buy clothes from charity shops, or Mantaray clothes when theyre reduced (I've had some of my Mantaray tops for years!). By doing this, I've also trimmed down my wardrobe- although at the minute I've got quite a lot as I'm pregnant and lots of my stuff doesn't fit!! (The post Christmas sales have been a godsend!!)

    Have a lovely evening everyone!!!!

I'm thinking of not buying any clothes for a year. Not committed myself yet...

A friend of mine set herself the challenge of not buying any clothes, apart from underwear, for a year u less they were from charity shops. She succeeded and looked remarkably smart in some of her outfits. The secret is to find charity shops in well heeled areas if possible where you stand a better chance of finding good quality garments.

I don,t think the same applies to men clothes though. I think most males, regardless of where they live, are happy to hang onto their clothes until they are hanging off them in threadbare rags :rotfl:

Hi - everyone is doing very well!
I have a pot of chicken broth cooking from yesterday's carcass. I boiled it for five hours on its own as I have been making a lot of bone broth (kittie I think it you who mentioned you are also eating bone broth ). It is always fab.
I reread some of a Nigella cookbook yesterday and she said when her mum roasted a chicken she always did two, one for eating and one for the fridge. I have cooked two at the same time a few times so I would have some to put in the freezer but now this really makes sense to me. It's about using up oven space as well as having something so versatile for further meals.
I have ironed two weeks' worth of clothes as we have one of our sons and his girlfriend coming to stay for a few days later in the week.i want maximum time with them without worrying about what I have ready clothes-wise for work. The roast chicken and gravy from yesterday has been frozen for Thursday, when they arrive. That way I can come home from work and ta dahhh it will be easy for make tea.
Someone mentioned men's clothes in charity shops. I have picked up some great shirts for me from the men's rails, hardly worn or new. My thinking is that they have been presents and haven't been liked. Worth a look anyway. I wear the small size and there is usually a good selection. They are handy over a T shirt.
Ok off to feed dog, delighted dog in fact as she has been getting some chicken scraps with her tea.
    Have a lovely evening all

  • Hi All,

Hope everyone has had a good day. Today I planned a NSD... That was until something dramatic happened...

This story begins in my full on consumer days, when I went to buy a new pair of glasses, I wear glasses full-time shall we say, and have done since I was about 14. Glasses have to be perfect not only for appearances but also for vision, so at this time I was working in a pretty neat job earning the most I'd ever earned and so upon browsing the store I went ahead and picked the nicest, most beautiful glasses, which of course came with a £250 price tag.

Shift forward ten months, to when the handle breaks. At this point I must have been getting slightly savvy as I looked at the handle and thought I haven't done that, it's not my fault. - I had a second opinion that said the same. So I took the glasses in store and explained. The person working there wasn't very nice at all, they took the glasses to their manager and they both stood at the back of the store discussing me, turning around once in a while to scowl. They came back and explained that they thought it was my fault, so I went on a little more, by this point I had nothing to loose. To which they agreed that they'd post the glasses off for a full examination with head office.

One whole month later, it came back as design fault and I was to be given a replacement pair. That was in July.

So skip forward seven months or so... and what happens?

You got it. The handle falls off. Same exact place!

I go to New York in 3 days, I can not wear my spare pair imagine the photos. *cries*

So I drove to a different VE, a different one to the one I used previously (due to the whole awkwardness) and went into explain, the assistant was AMAZING! A full exchange for a different pair, done within an hour! I just had to pay £10 for the upgrade on the frames.

So many lessons learned here :) and £10 well spent!
  • Evening all, hope everyone has had a nice weekend!

I've had a manic and busy weekend at work so I haven't been spending much. DH made some lovely panna cotta for us with gelatine and frozen raspberries that we already had! During our trip to buy the other ingredients, we picked up some heavily reduced food bargains which was very exciting!

I have been putting off a few spends for a while which I had deemed unnecessary, however they are becoming more necessary as time goes on:

    - A hair cut: I haven't had my hair cut since May 2014 (a month before our wedding) as I am trying to grow my hair, but I've not got a lot of split ends so I think it's time to bite the bullet.
    - Work trousers: I recently ripped mine which I have attempted to repair, but in reality, I do need to have a spare pair so I may pop into M&S as I was given a voucher for Christmas.
    - Wisdom tooth removal: After two awful infections, I have made the decision to have my wisdom tooth out. I have been putting it off due to the cost and I didn't want to ruin eating around Christmas so we will see when I pluck up the courage to make the call!

You can get most of the same on spotify. I have to buy music from Itunes to use in my classes as you aren't allowed to use spotify when you teach fitness classes. Used to be that you could only get 10 hours a month free spotify, but its unlimited now, just that you get adverts every few songs.

If someone was working out at home, some of the workout stuff on spotify is actually very good, Ive bought some that I use when Im teaching, Itunes sell it.

In the process, I have had to get some circular needles sorted so suddenly decided to tidy my knitting stuff, seeing that I have the full set starting from 55 years ago, plus bamboo set, plus a (prized) lantern moon set plus karbonz in the thinner needles. I have dpns of all lengths, sizes and quality, including donated ones suitable for my leather knitting belt, I have to learn on that one. Circular needles of all sizes and lengths neatly stored in cheap ebay cotton drawstring pouches and marked with marker pen and also sets of interchangeables from chiaogoo (fab) and also knitpicks. That plus all the other bits and pieces, must be worth a small fortune. I did any donating years ago so am keeping the lot as I use almost everything, except the nostalgic antique set. I am not making more room, just sorting and leading to good feng shui

Hi kittie will I get told off here if I ask about your lantern Moon and karbonz? ebony or rosewood lantern moons and ate both types fixed cable or did you get any interchangeable ones?

I have some straight karbonz and really want lantern moons I need some circulars so want to get the best ones I will enjoy.

I'm really enjoying the thread as although we are no where near retirement we are trying to stop acquiring more stuff as we have too much!
