On the back of my last Amazon post there is also this... Send a £20 giftcard, get £5 extra to keep yourself.

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/browse.html/ref=pe_758171_61711481_pe_button/?node=5225073031

Send the giftcard to yourself? your other half?

So technically this is me encouraging spending, however Amazon giftcard's don't expire for 100 years once there added to your account. I regularly use amazon for craft materials and books as they are simply the cheapest place around.

Important Notification: This offer is ONLY valid for customers who have received the e-mail invitation from Amazon.co.uk. If you did not receive an e-mail invitation from Amazon.co.uk, you are not eligible for this offer. To qualify, you must:
    (1) use the Amazon.co.uk account associated with the e-mail address to which the invitation was sent, in order to purchase the Amazon.co.uk Gift Card(s),

I didn't get an email but it worked for me :)
Be sure that the offer has been applied before making your purchase :)

    Hi

I tried this right up to checkout and it doesnt mention anything about an extra £5. Is it only after completion it shows up?
    NOT BUYING IT 2018!

Consumerism is.....buying things you don't need with money you don't have to impress people you don't know and probably wouldn't like even if you did know them.
  • Hi all

One of my aims this year is to try and make more time for myself. By necessity I have two part time jobs, do voluntary work, help hubby with the admin for his business, care for our teenage son who has health problems as well as doing all the usual domestic stuff and trying to make a bit of time for our youngest son.

So this afternoon I have downed tools and sat down for a bit - I am trying to ignore all the things that need doing.

I need to make a list for food shopping tomorrow. We are low on milk but I will make it last. If needs be we can have scrambled eggs for breakfast.

We had soup and bread for lunch and I have made a bakewell tart for later. Tea is going to be two chicken breasts stretched to feed four of us, not quite sure what chicken dish I am going to conjure up!

ISLANDMAID. I got rid of sky a couple of years back, and the only thing I missed was the comedy channel. We bought a humax freestat box to replace it so could still have the recording and time shifting. Between that and freeserve and a netflix subscription we have never looked back The netflix is a monthly subscription BUT we always find something to watch, and indeed we can't always keep up with the box sets we would like to watch

I,ve been looking at the Humax box, they look like just what we need - I have amassed some money in my paypal account by selling loads in the last couple of weeks, and as I will save near £50 pm on sky I may get it - can,t beleive we were spending £600 a year on film repeats:o

Spent 89p on milk today, sent DS2 as I ALWAYS buy more

Is this ship a rowing boat or a speed boat. i can,t keep up with the posts !

I think it's too early to sow onion seeds indoors in most parts of the Uk. Nighttime low temperatures and low light levels will result in very leggy seedlings which will never turn into strong plants, even if the seeds germinate. Mid February indoors would be the earliest to guarantee success.

But if you want a growing experiment at low cost, try growing pea shoots for an exotic addition to your salads.
Don,t use garden centre pea packets. They are far too expensive for this. A huge packet of Whitworth's or other dried peas (the sort you use for soup) costs £1 or less and produces perfectly good shoots.

Put just an inch of compost in a shallow tray or low sided supermarket fruit punnet. Cover the surface with died peas and keep the compost continually moist. Keep on a window kedge to get as much light as possible. You can start snipping the pea shoots when about six inches high and they are also nice tucked in sandwhiches.
  • I think my mum in law may be being a bit hasty!
We use onion sets not seeds and these don't need to be planted until mid-end march! The same time as the potatoes!

Onion seeds are earlier, sow (inside) at end of feb apparently.

This is good anyway as it gives us more time for prepping and weeding.

We got the polytunnel frame up today :-) it was leftover from the farm and has been stored for years. It is 16 ft x 21 ft, we just need to get the polythene and dig and weed the soil that will be inside.

We measured the veg plot which we will dig down from the poly tunnel, this is being extended to compensate for the poly tunnel. This will be 16ft wide x 47ft long. Then we will have a bean trench (approx 30ft long), a greenhouse and a 4ft x 8ft salad bed in the garden.

We have fruit trees cooking apple x2, eating apple x 2, pear x 2, plum x 2 and a cherry, 3 x 15ft rows of raspberries, come gooseberries, 10 rhubarb plants and approx 100 strawberry plants.

We have been working on establishing these over the last few years, it was the first year for veggies last year (quite neglected due to lots of building work) and so still lots of work to do on the plot.

But the vision of all the harvesting and moneysaving makes all the work worth it, I love being outside too so it's not exactly a hardship!

We need to store some rainwater by the plot and we hoping to run some guttering from a shed in the garden, through the hedge and into barrels in the field. We are on a meter so it's important to save as much water as possible. We are going to try and get the barrels free so hopefully just the guttering to buy!

Persuaded hubby against a takeaway today (third time this year!).

Off to cook tea before he can Change his mind!

:) Oh simple joys, my trousers which needed the new zip are done and ready to be worn at some point in the next couple of days and it's only 2 sleeps until the washing machine arrives, am soooo happy about that.

And adding to the sheer joy of existance was a successful raid on the third layer of discounts at Tosspots, the ones where they are virtually giving the stuff away for pence, have lots of lovely things to eat and to share tomorrow - pal coming around.

I was thinking about how life is much more interesting if you don't just throw money at any problem or issue and sit down and try to think of ways to maximise your enjoyment whilst minimising your expenditures. It's a sane island halfway between the shores of Profligacy and the whirlpools of Miserliness.

Tomorrow I will have a much needed haircut and am tweaking the style so it should need doing every 2nd month, thus halving my annual hairdressing bill from £120 to £60.

I'm very impressed at the substantial savings so many are reporting by re-doing their suppliers for various services. I mean, £600 for mostly repeated movies, 2nd hand DVDs sell here for £1-£2, you could have a humungous home cinema library for £600 and watch it exactly when you wanted to watch it.

Returning after one of my anxious moments...

The work to the hall is starting but I'm trying really hard not to buy stuff to go in it-someone lead me away from pinterest pleeese! We have plenty of pictures and nik naks to decorate it but I am pining for a teak, mid century desk and chair for a study area I want to create. Apart from fleabay, I have found a furniture place in Carlisle which specialises in Scandinavian style things and apparently they encourage haggling Yay!

Bought bananas today for a pound but haven't spent anything for the last three days. We have enough food in the house to keep us going for a bit now, so that should stop us buying.

I allocate £30 a month for myself to spend on anything I want, but I'm still surviving on the money I had last month. I want to save this month's money and get through the rest of the month without it. I have £2 left from December lol...this should be interesting :D

I might try out the pea sprouting idea-thank you Primrose for posting that-I used to sprout beans way back when I was on a raw food diet and they were delish. Also I didn't know you could eat beetroot leaves, I must have a go.

I can hear pinterest calling me but I must resist, must resist...

I have needed a new pair of black shoes for work for a while but haven't had much luck looking around. Finally bought some today. Definitely a need, not a want. After reading a post on the FrugalWoods blog, I'm thinking of not buying any clothes for a year. Not committed myself yet...

    Bake Off Boss!
I wobbled a bit on Friday when I bought a framed picture to finish off my living room for £8.50 in a local CS. I have just put it up and it looks perfect. It is in great condition without any scratches on the frame & I found that the print is selling for £39.99 on a couple of internet sites & framed the same as mine for £124.99 so I think I can forgive myself.

I too have traded in some books on Amazon. Eight books were worth just over £17.00 so I'll qualify for the £5.00 bonus as well.
I'm dieting at the moment. Have lost 13lbs so far and need to drop another couple of stones so this money will be useful to buy me some new clothes.

Have tidied around in my tiny utility area. Needed something to store odds and ends in and remebered that I had a plastic drawer unit in the spare bedroom where it had been dumped when I moved nearly 2 years ago so that is now in there being put to good use.

I haven't put anything in the loft yet but I need to get some boarding for it. Will get this in March, hopefully, as my son said he will have time to put it down for me then. I also want to save for a loft ladder. I think that I'll do that rather than buying things for the garden this spring.

Don't get me wrong, still repeats BUT just not so many channels of them. I've plugged mine into the wifi for iplayer for catch up tv ( can't get itv player ) but the netflix is a godsend. Well worth the subscription. The humax can be temperamental at time but turning it off and off usually sorts it
