Help!!! Crashed and burned in a major way in Sainsburys on Sunday and feeling bad, somebody give me absolution please?

Went in for some basic bits and then saw a nice dress for work at half price, well it's only £9 so that's ok surely? Then I saw a mini chopper for only £6.95, well my food processor is broken on my Kenwood and surely £6.95 is better than a new Kenwood isn't it? Then I saw a George Zforeman grill at half price and Im trying to improve my diet so that is ok because it's helping my health isn't it, and then finally a half price fitness gadget with the same stupid excuse......bang goes £50 just like that!

I've managed to justify it to myself enough to get me past the checkout although in the run up to Christmas I was actually quite Scroogish, spent a tiny amount on presents!

Does anyone else just go off the rails sometimes? I think it is all tied in with emotions and I'm sure it won't surprise you to hear Im also most definitely on the cuddly side size wise as well....any ideas? Am I going to be thrown overboard, marooned somewhere on a desert island?

Just think what those items would have cost you at full price. They sound reasonable purchases to me, just as long as the appliances are actually used and don't end up gathering dust.

Perhaps only take out with you a small amount of cash per time for a month or so, so you feel more positive for sticking to targets.
  • Just as a side note, I know many of you write down what you spend. I have an App ok this App costs £2.99 but I say this because it's £2.99 that has been well spent here!

You can pop in your direct debits, month on month, and your wage every month, set budgets etc... and when you spend you pop in the details in there, monitoring budgets etc... But also for those of you with a tight spend you can see statistics such as a breakdown of your spending and a forecast (so you can see where you may run into trouble financially 6 months down the line based on the amount coming in and out) it's called MoneyWiz - Personal Finance :)

((((((((Murphy))))))))) we've all been there, only the details change. And, we're like the US Marines in that our motto should be No (wo)man is left behind!

I think a lot of shopping is about filling in the gaps we think we have. I'm about 4 stone overweight, doesn't look too gross as I'm nearly 6 ft tall, but it's too heavy and it's making me feel rotten. So I buy more clothes to make up for the fact that I either can't get into my faves or I can but look like a sausage in a sausage skin. So then I have some chocolate because that'll make me feel better, notwithstanding the sugar habit was what caused the overweight to start with - arrrgggghhhhh!!!!!!!!!! :wall:

I was looking a handbags in the cs today. I have a perfectly adequate handbag, worth all of the 50p I paid for it. But handbags, like general bags, like purses/ wallets and luggage, are all about the Magic Container, y'know, the one which will:

    1. Hold everthing you might possibly need (kitchen sink, defibrillator, complete weekend outfit, B00ts makeup counter, cuddly toy etc etc).

    2. Be such a chameleon that it will go office to casual, day to night, co-ordinate with each and every ensemble in your wardrobe.

    3. Take up a really small space on the outside, be really svelte, but open like a tardis, to hold as much as the spare room.

    4. Weigh no more than thistledown.

    5. Cause you to be the envy of your girlfriends and to have swoonsome blokes swoon at your feet, so struck are they by the wonders of The Bag (or perhaps they walked into scaffolding whilst busy looking down your cleavage, who can know?) *

Anyway, I was going to say I had an ephiphany in the c.s. but I'm not sure I can spell it, so suffice to say that I had a LBM; it ain't about the bag. The Bag doesn't exist, it is a fruitless quest, there are only bags. If they're big enough for all your Stuff you need a porter to carry one. If they're svelte and weigh thistledown, they hold one door key and a credit card. If they're trendy your g/fs might admire them but blokes don't give a monkeys.

Perfection in bag-dom, pursery or wallethood isn't possible. There is only Good Enough. And this principle carries over into all walks of life.

;) I once had a shopping bag which holds the record for being the most noteworthy portable possession I have owned in nearly 50 years. Complete strangers used to accost me demanding to know where it'd come from, hardly a day went past without it acquiring an admirer, sometimes several. The pressure of being a fash-pack leader caused me to retire it to in-home storage only.

It was a Doy bag from Hoxfam made of plastic foil drink pouches. Vicky Beckham, eat yer heart out. :rotfl:

    * I once saw this done IRL. Not my cleavage, tho.
Every increased possession loads us with a new weariness.

Today has been a very good day. Got good bargains in my food shop, found 4p, made a very cheap but lovely fish pie for dinner, & decluttered 2 computers by selling them to music magpie just have to wait for them to collect now. We haven't used either for a long time & they need to leave the house. I am happy they are going somewhere useful.
Back to work tommorow finally! Planning a NSD as I don't need anything else for a few days.
    lovely to read everyone's news.

    Evening:D

I've finally got to the 1st of January's posts...am so slow!

Stayed out of the shops and out of trouble today:D Finished cleaning the larder...I have a chutney stockpile so some of it's going in sarnies from now on and a jar is being given to a friend.
We bought ourselves a dehumidifier early last month as we don't have a TD and we were beginning to get mould. The situation has vastly improved but have repainted the coving and cut in the edges on my son's ceiling with a bathroom mould resistant paint to remove the stain it's left behind. We had some paint left over from doing our ceiling last month.

Shortish run and then been with my parents this afternoon helping them declutter their garage. Stuff now sorted for ebay, recycling, freecycle and a small amount for landfill. Enjoyed it. Brought some bits home for the jumble I'm helping at on 17th Jan. Now that will be my personal challenge because I'm like a kiddie in a sweet shop:p This year I've made a list in an attempt to curb my enthusiasm and bring back much less that I took. We shall have to see!

I have had LBM.Earlier I was jesting about spending £6 in the charity shop and that got me thinking.

I am organized,I plan,I have no debt.I HAVE GOT TO WRITE EVERY PENNY SPENT DOWN.I was fooling myself in thinking it is my husband and not me who spends money. He spends larger amounts but less often.

Since January the first I have spent £44 .Admittedly most not for myself but I am shocked.

The culprit is gifts.I am not extravagant but how it adds up.7 birthday cards and a christening card, plus gifts. Yikes!!!!!!!!!!!!

On a lighter note OH bought himself a shirt today.I think he is to shirts what the lady is to shoes.

    HI everyone

hope everyone is OK I go to sewing class once a month and then do 6 all day courses a year and I really enjoy it so it will be continuing into 2015 but I'm at home a lot as I work from home so it's good for social contact I'm also disabled and have depression and anxiety so sewing helps me mange it as it's quite calming

one of the people I know from sewing told me she gets her material from the local scrap store in Southampton it's £15 .00 to join for the year apparently they get stuff from local business that they no longer have use for so that is something I will look into when I've got the stuff down I've already got :rotfl: I'm going to find out more info on 20 th

Totally agree with you, I'm in a similiar position, disability, working from home, and I have signed up to do a couple of courses this year, and do sewing knitting and crochet at home for the positive and calming vibes it gives me.

You started me wondering if the Guildford/Woking scrap store still exists.

    Appreciate your post :T:T:j:A

Sent an item of clothing back to JL today that was ordered on-line at Christmas. Liked it but didn't need it so sent it back. Did a very small shop in c0op on bits we needed but spent less than £8 no unnecessary spends.

Spending this year will include hair and nail appointments as they are necessary to me. It will not include clothes. It will include renovation of our home and will include holidays. It will not include trips to the garden centre.

I won't even try to post everything I buy in the SM or any other foodie place but I will post and admit to any unnecessary spending.

Wish I could get YS bargains. Most of the mark downs here have a mere 20p off.

GreyQueen, you are a wise bunny and I bow to your superior knowledge...actually you are very perceptive, I am always looking for that "perfect" item/feeling/look, I was aware of it with clothes but hadn't really thought of it outside of that, interesting!

    Afternoon everyone!

I'm just back from a trip to the shops. I had a wander into N*xt and was genuinely taken by surprise how I felt about the stuff in there. Over the years I must have bought a ton of stuff from there, but today it just looked so cheap and tacky - and yet in monetary terms its far from it. I was looking at the knitwear and wondered how many wears each item would get before being tossed into the charity bag. Not many. Nothing looked like it would be bought and cherished, it was very much throw away fashion. Oh my - the scales are falling from my eyes!

Big shout out to Animal Tribe and her road map wrapping paper - yay! :

Totally agree with you, 27 years ago I bought my first three piece suit - jacket, trousers, skirt, such great quality lasted me years, until it was so out of fashion, and worn I had to say goodbye.

Now poor quality and their size 16 shape is interesting :rotfl:

Decided never to be tempted again
