Also, on a gardening note, I have ordered from vegetable seeds.net which have a 50% off sale on at the moment. I know this is a not buying it thread, but if you can only grow salad leaves, toms, spring onions and a couple of herbs you will likely saving quite a bit of cash. SM veg just doesn't taste anything like home grown

    Hello:D

Nowt bought except a bite of lunch before our trip to the cinema to see the last part of The Hobbit as the cinema chain only allow you to take in their very expensive snacks. No thank you to that particular ruse:D

Have quite genuinely lost my bottle of cream cleaner:o I shall be interested to see where it turns up when I do rediscover it. In the meantime it's brought forward my plans for making my own for which I already have the ingredients.

This one looks ok and easy to do.

More decluttering. Have culled the holey old pillowcases and consigned them to the cloth recycling and finally put the two white damask table cloths that I rescued last year and still haven't used in the bag for the up and coming jumble sale. Tea towels have been graded into "be seen in public" and ones not to see the light of day again. Instead they get used to line the fridge and kitchen drawers and this last lot are going on top of the cupboards that I've cleaned so far. Have cut a corner of each so they don't end up back in the respectable stream:rotfl:

  • Happy New Year everyone!

Today I have had a NSD, but hubby did buy some coffee on his way back from work this afternoon - said it was an essential item!

I have been cleaning and de-cluttering today and it has felt good! I am very clean and tidy anyway, but still have the need to do thorough cleans quite often, much to the amusement of my hubby and friends. I like everything to have it's place, even the items inside the cupboards and drawers - I think I have a mild obsessive compulsive disorder!

Dinner tonight is a roast beef dinner with leftover everything, so I am using up some parsnips and potatoes too. Have just about used everything up in the fridge, freezer and cupboards and have not bought anything (except milk) since a few days before Christmas.

The purse strings have been tightned and I have a set budget for everything for the coming year. I couldn't do the 'no supermarket' challenge, but will try a mix of both using cash and see how I get on. Still enjoying reading other people's posts - here's to a great new year! xxx
  • Technically a NSD here. My DD has the most curly, crazy hair in the world and we spend so much time and shed so many tears over it. Someone suggested trying a silk pillowcase at night because it doesn't matter lovely her hair is at bed time, its a mess by the morning. I did buy them from ebay, but I have used up some of the Nectar points I accrue and never spend, so technically I havent spent any money and I am hoping that if it works, I wont have to use so many detangling products, so it will be worth it in the end.

I have also cancelled my gym membership, so thats a £30 a month saving.

    Hi all,

I,ve done really well on fleabay - lots has sold, just one item left from this batch :)

Been having a kitchen clear out - decided to get rid of giant slow cooker (i have another smaller one) and a bread maker I never use, prefer to make my own. I will freecycle them, as i,d like to help someone else with these items, rather than make a few quid - might also put 'assorted other" kitchen bits on there ie rolling pin, couple of lasagne dishes, cheese dome thingy and some port sippers LOL hope my decluttering helps someone else start their frugal journey.
Note to self - STOP SPENDING MONEY !!

Thank you so much dND, I want a baby, CAFgirl and GreyQueen - I feel like I have just been given a private tutorial on the magic of Grow-your-Own.

The trouble is tomatoes and peppers feature quite highly on that list and we don't have any plans for getting a greenhouse. Oh well, we also love beans and peas so I can sow plenty of them.

Tomatoes grow happily outside if you choose the right variety. My favourite is Garden Pearl, which is a bush variety (so you don't need to bother about removing sideshoots). They don't grow tall, so no need to stake them either :D I start mine off on the kitchen windowsill in early March, and put into separate pots once they are big enough to handle. They stay inside until it starts to warm up a bit, then they go out into one of those fold away mini plastic greenhouses to harden off. If frost is forecast I bring them in at night. If you don't have a plastic greenhouse any sheltered sunny spot will do, but remember to bring them in every night. It is a bit like looking after babies :) Late May they can usually go out into their big pots. They need to be fed and watered, but I always get a good crop - I had enough for chutney and tomato sauce for the freezer from my pots last year :D Other years, ie less sunny ones, I don't get so many, but I always get some :)

Garden Pearl is a small, sweet cherry tomato variety - think children picking them and eating like sweets :D, and I have found it more resistant than many varieties to blight.

Peppers are a bit more fussy - have you tried growing them on a windowsill though? I find that they grow ok inside in pots. Chillis too - I can usually keep these over winter in the glass back porch thing. I have them growing as we speak. And I cheat with chillis - buy a single plant from the supermarket or garden centre, and it lives for ages, and you get loads of chillis. I find one plant is enough, so don't bother growing them from seed. HTH.
  • Just got in from a stressful day at work - customer kept badgering me to go out for a drink in the pub (and making fun of my book). Aside from the fact I don't like him pubs put me on edge and my depression/anxiety has been high enough at the moment. One thing I have decided to do tonight is to sleep up in my bed. It sounds stupid but since I came back from holiday in November I have slept on the sofa every night. And I don't know why. I can't face going upstairs. Today that changes.

Aside from the rent I've not spent anything, and I have also read and reviewed another book. I have to get to 101 on Goodreads, as I had already reviewed The Stand by Stephen King, before I started the task. Tonight I'm going to work on my cross stitch a bit.
  • I thought I had posted earlier but it must have got lost in cyberspace.

I have fallen at the first hurdle and spent £30 joining Weight Watchers online for 3 months. I only intend to use it for three months for inspiration then go back to MFP .

Please don't make me walk the plank.

You shouldn't be harassed like that at work  Can't your manager tell him to clear off? (Till recently I was a manager who was good at telling people to clear off lol)

Good luck ems; been down the stress and depression route too and I know how frustrating it can be not knowing why it is you can't do something. One of mine was sitting a chair with a bit of rubbish by one foot and yet not being able to pick it up and put it in the bin by the other foot. Our brains are just weird. Will be thinking of you.
