They won't though, that's the whole point.

How do you infer that? The OP has nowhere stated their nationality; based on this country and this forum they are most likely British.

They clearly said they have ID cards from a different EEA country. Why do you think they'd make this thread if they didn't?

Well, not stated outright, but the OP does say "we're afraid to take the chance" in the first post, which would be a fair indicator that at least one of them has an EEA ID card, assuming they are not here on the wind-up.

I thought the UK issued those for a short time,in which case it could have been issued in the UK or am I imagining that

Surely you'll need passports for the STN-Brno leg so why not use passports for the domestic leg too? Am I missing something or are you making this unnecessarily complicated?
They won't though, that's the whole point.

But they won't be able to fly to Borneo on an EEA Id card, the clue being the European part of EEA, they're valid for travel within the EEA, Switzerland and some other specified countries, not worldwide, so yes, they would need a passport.

You're not imagining it, they were issued from approx 2006-2010, but the Identity Documents Act 2010 repealed the Identity Cards Act 2006, and UK-issued ID cards to British Citizens ceased to be valid travel documents in Jan 2011.

It's not illegal to carry/use one previously issued if you still have it, but they have no official weight anymore, and UK is not on the list of countries whose ID cards are recognised by Ryanair.

They're going to Brno (Czech Republic), not Borneo...:)

EEA ID cards perfectly valid for the international sector, but not, it seems, domestic (at least on FR).
