This is the main reason my partner isn't closing his Vanquis, despite wanting to. He hasn't used it in months, but the other 2 credit cards he has got have only been active for 6-9 months, so we figure it's worth keeping the Vanquis on file to show a long term relationship. How long would you guess it would be before I should close the Vanquis for good?

I'm wondering now if we should be putting the odd shop on it every other month or so and paying in full rather than just leaving it completely dormant.

I'd keep it for 3+ years. Using it every now and again is a good idea, so Vanquis consider your partner for credit limit bumps.
  • I had a limit of 3500 with Vanquished. I was paying about £70 per month interest on 3k plus debt.
Recently I got a Barclaycard card Balance Transfer card with 36 months int free.
I put my vanquished and Santander balances on to my Barclaycard and saving nearly 100 quid a month.
Barclays gave me starting limit of £7300 !!!

Why were you running a balance on a Vanquis card?

Sometimes people are in debt, and the 0% options aren't always available!

When I had my lightbulb moment I was carrying about £5k on a combination of these awful cards, but even after reading every single article on MSE nobody would touch me with a bargepole for a balance transfer card, and eventually when they did accept me it was for £500-£1000 limits, so I had to gradually drip feed it off.

Eventually someone gave us a £3k balance transfer which was enough to clear the rest, but it took a very long time to get everything on 0%
  • Although the interest rate Aqua (New Day Ltd) can charge is high, as some have mentioned, if you pay in full each month, you will pay nothing. I never leave a balance owing carried over.

I have had credit problems in the past but Aqua were kind enough to take a chance with me. I started off with a £300 limit in March, increased to £950 in June, then offered an increase to £2000 late September, which I have accepted.

Not sure why they offered the increase, I probably spend between £50 a month and £200 a month on it, pay off in full.

I like the idea of available credit for things like section 75 protection, what happens if the washing machine packs up, tv, or most importantly the car, or I get an unexpected bill?

People like myself, have been not so trustworthy when it comes to credit in the past (long story) but I intend to remain disciplined and return the faith they have given me over the past 6 months.

I phoned them up and it sounded like they didn't have a clue, they said I should apply again as I should of been accepted, so they think I put the wrong information in by accident which caused the decline which I know I never, not sure if it will be worth the appeal I know they should never be declining me as my credit report is decent apart from a few credit searches, okay I don't have loads of history but it doesn't say you need it.

I suspect you may find that it is because you have multiple searches on your file. Might be making you look desperate for credit?

Did you check your files before you applied (anywhere)?

I'm at £3k with Aqua, less than 2 years after starting off at £250. But looking at these posts I'm obviously not trying hard enough :)

    Nope, read post 24. :)

I too have a £4250 credit limit which has been increased several times since I first got the card 18 months ago.
