You make no sense, the Postmaster told you to use Special Delivery to be covered and "you took a punt" on Recorded Delivery knowing it would not cover it?

I'm not sure how you not sending by RMSD was the fault of the Post Office, especially as they actually suggested you use the correct method?

Or do you mean something else by the bits in Highlight?
OP assumed, after being told by post office staff, that the letter was covered for £50 so was only risking £30 when in fact there was no coverage.
  • I always thought recorded delivery covered you up to the cost of 100 x the price of a first class stamp ie £62 ?

It wasn't only recorded that offered compensation to the level you state. All first and second class mail (recorded and non recorded) gave compo up to the value of 100 1st class stamps, but this was changed a while ago.
The maximum now payable is £20 for standard mail and £50 for signed for.
  • And that compensayshun is for non delivery, this package was delivered and signed for.

Actually, it would have covered for loss of contents or "part loss" as RM refer to it. But even when the compensation limit was 100x 1st class stamp, vouchers & gift cards have never been included in this.
  • This saga is rapidly descending into a farce (if it were not serious). I have been trying to send Post Office Ltd Customer Services various proofs yet the email bounces back - they say the email address is no longer in use! and refer to the form on Royal Mail's web site. One problem the on line form does not allow attachments!! I have now spoken to customer services three times, each time they insist the email address is in use. So how can I get the proofs to them - using 'signed for' mail, I don't think so.

You're wasting your time, they won't pay any compensation so it's pointless sending proof of posting. And if they were to pay compensation I believe they want the originals anyway so email is no use.

Did Toys R Us say they could refund/replace if they had not been used? If so this is going to be the best option to pursue. Wait until they can do their checks tomorrow and hopefully get a replacement. And this time, send them by Special Delivery!
  • Toys-R-Us position on Friday was NO REFUND OR REPLACE even if they are not used!! so they are happy to sit on my money - that was actually said to me over the phone! I am trying to clarify this as I don't think it can be legal.

Royal Mail/Post Office Ltd will not even investigate the theft without sight of these proofs.

Of course it's legal. It's not their fault that the items have been lost.
One important thing to remember is that when you get to the end of this sentence, you'll realise it's just my sig.

You're missing a trick aren't you Custardy. Have you forgotten it's nearly Christmas?

Don't they normally blame all the thieving on the casuals at this time of year? Poor s*ds. No CWU protection for them. They just do all the work for the lowest pay and then get the blame when something goes missing.
