Ive had a tesco credit card for years and on the very rare odd occasion I've forgot to pay and it's been a day or two late with no problems at all.
A quick call admitting the error and providing you haven't done it within previous 12 months they are usually fine with it. I've probably made this error maybe 2 or 3 times over many many years.

Just got off the phone with Tesco, they did waive the £12 and the lady on the phone said that my credit file won't be affected because "we refunded the £12 for you", I asked her twice but I'm not convinced, I don't see the connection between the late payment fee reversal and the credit history file.

@stclair: thanks I really hope that's the case with Tesco as well, I'm so annoyed with myself for letting this happen.

I had a late payment in 2010 with a catalogue, I normally paid it in full manually but I was in hospital with pneumonia and was in no state to do anything, the balance was only £35 and they charged me £12, this was refunded when I told them i had been in hospital but I still got a late payment marker, I think it might have been 5 days late though.
