Well the brushed cotton sheets and the electric blanket were on last night and it was sooo lovely to climb into bed last night. Nothing beats having a warm and toasty bed to look forward to at the end of a freezing cold day.

I'm so grateful for this thread and its accumulated wisdom!:j:j:j

My brushed cotton sheets have arrived from Littlewoods today. I was holding off ordering because they are a bit dearer than ordinary cotton sheets. Then I got a letter with a code for £30 off if I ordered £60 so I decided to make the most of it and now I have two for our bed and two for DD's bed. It works out at almost half price.

Smokeless fuel delivered this morning - used on the fire tonight. Much better than the (softwood) logs, and even the ordinary coal.

External draught excluder for front and back doors delivered? Just need to find time to fit it!
  • Love this thread...thank you all X

Saw mentioned making a draft excluder stuffed with carrier bags....got loads and a pair of leggings headed for bin I could use if worth it.
Have a Bsc Hons open degree from the Open University 2015 :j:D:eek::T

I use smokeless eggs greenbee, far more heat from them.
We've had sleet hail and snow here today and the snow is lying and freezing solid. It finally feels like winter :D

Where we live is always windy -but its was VERY windy yesterday.
Some terracotta garden pots filled with perennials which had been all placed in the a sheltered corner-but in full sun (when we get some!)-the actual plants on some pots have been uprooted -with soil from the pot and the plants were flying around the garden while the pots are half empty and rolling round!

Nothing else happened at home other than tree's across roads in the locality, and the local life boat had to be launched to the aid of surfers-mad people-luckily everyone was okay.

No snow, but it's rained for about 2 weeks-glad I've got my in-door washing line, and large airer.

    Take care everyone.

  • It's summer here in Australia, but that doesn't mean the preparations are unneeded. My DH cuts free wood from bush blocks that he has permission to enter, all year round, ready to season for the times ahead. By the time winter comes our stash is well sorted and we don't have to panic buy a load from a wood merchant. I love looking at stacked wood too, it feels safe and homely.
Listen to the sound of the wind in the trees when no wind stirs....
  • We also never pass up on free wood of any kind! yesterday we realised that what we were putting on the wood stove was a mixture of the bigger trunks from the laurel hedge we took out 3 years ago, part of the old decking from the village pub, some rafters we 'rescued' when builders took off the roof of a bungalow across the road to put on an upper storey and brand new rafter offcuts we were given by the builders on another site when they were roofing an enormous new house being built on one of the lanes near here. We've got all sorts of wood from all sorts of places but it all keeps us warm on the stove!!!
