Preparing for Winter V

Thankyou, i cant wait, I'm really excited to get in done so even if it is a frosty winter my surroundings will be nice. Who doesn't love fairy lights! They are on my shopping list.
I tried my electric wall heater in the living room today and it keeps going off. I'm not sure if its an issue with a timer which I have never used, I always just switch it on when I need the heat. I have never liked how complicated the timer and the settings are. If it needs replacing I'm going to get one that connects to Alexa and let her handle it.

I was so cold last night that the big duvet made an appearance today (10.5 tog). I’ve never felt the cold, always loved cold weather but since menopause hit and the flushes have died down, my goodness do I feel it. I put the electric blanket back on the bed too. I do love a cosy bed.
Door curtains went back up today too, our doors need replacing (next years job) but the curtains do help for now. Dug out DH’s heated gilet too, he lives and dies in it. I’ve got several big fleecy hoodies dotted around the house too so if I’m chilly it’s easy to reach for one.Next in the list is a log order and some kindling.9 -
Hello all, am rejoining the MSE threads after some time away, and seemed like winter preps are a good place to begin.
My stove needs a good clean out & the chimney sweeping, added to this week's list, along with cleaning my sadly neglected windows, as someone else mentioned.
My slow cooker will be back in action this weekend, and I need to do a food stocktake and use up various oddments before re-stocking for autumn/winter.
Finances will be very precarious this winter, so I'm getting a grip now before the colder and darker weather arrives - plenty inspiration here!July 2024 GC £0.00/£400

@Cheapskate, welcome back. I saw elsewhere that you'd mentioned a huge food bill, then saw the word 'teens' so it made sense before I had time to comment. I wonder if you are in an area that does Olio? Our local one isn't very busy but I do see lots of bread on it and that can make quite a difference to teenage food bills. It may be worth a try.I think a bit of sunshine is good for frugal living. (Cranky40)
The sun's been out and I think I’m solar powered (Onebrokelady)

2nd the Olio recommendation here - it’s good for free food and free household items too. We collected a free WiFi plug this evening from an Olioer and in turn had a chap come out and collect an old coffee machine we listed on Olio from us earlier today. It’s all about reducing waste and stopping these items from going to landfill.
We had our 1st fire of season tonite and it was cosy and nice. Also nice to think the firewood was all free - unless you count the significant graft to collect, process and season the wood.
put the electric underblanket on bed at weekend and really enjoy that, but must be careful to use it on a low level and not for too long as it can lead to Erythema ab igne.
