Preparing for Winter V

The most common system is an air to water system, The are lots of discussions about them over on the Green or energy boards.

And lots of reasons why they're not at all suitable for older, poorly-insulated houses - especially where there's no room outside for the unit to be installed according to regs. Plus they don't half be noisy after a few years' use ...markin said:The most common system is an air to water system, The are lots of discussions about them ...We're all doomed9 -
I have a friend who works on historic buildings. She often uses ground source (or water source, although it’s less common) for old buildings. It heats at a lower temperature and is less stressful for the building. It also works well with big old cast iron radiators and pipes (as well as underfloor heating). And apparently it’s great for repelling moles. She often combines it with solar PV and battery walls, so it becomes even more efficient,Si_Clist said:
Note that Loubie has a ground source heat pump. Not the sort of thing you can easily install in the average old property ...fionaandphil said:@Loubie47 you will need to let us know how you get on with the heat pump. We have been looking at them for years but they don't look suitable for our old house so I'd be interested to know how you get on over the winter. We've been trying for years to install more eco friendly power but have failed - roof facing the wrong way, too many trees and shading etc13 -
Going for Covid booster jab tomorrow - I suppose that's a "preparing for winter"
Not sure if they are offering the flu jab at the same time, we'll see. I hope there aren't too many people there as they have us queueing outside the back entrance of the medical centre that's at the top of a very exposed and windy hill. Not really sure why they give you a specific appointment time either since they just ask your name and dob and then tick you off their list before waving you in.
It seems to be a "first come, first served" scenario.
Currently checking stocks ready for possible power-cuts, things like candles, matches, batteries, torches, thermos flasks etc. I'm old enough to remember the 70s and know we coped, even though it wasn't a pleasant experience. Baffled as to why there's been a block on a public information campaign on saving energy (although I can understand the need to not cause panic). Given the price of energy, I would have thought any helpful information could only be a good thing.Be kind to others and to yourself too.15 -
FWIW at our surgery they were telling folk that the two vaccinations have to be a fortnight apart.YorksLass said:Going for Covid booster jab tomorrow - I suppose that's a "preparing for winter"

That's interesting, had both of our vaccines less than a week apart. Sure it's fine 😬6

We get ours through work as work for the NHS, they did only both at the same time if you asked. I'm not sure of the rationale for this, perhaps not wanting to pressure people. May be different for different age groups and frailtiesSi_Clist said:

My sister had an invite to have both done at the same time but could choose on the day if she wanted both.✒️ Declutter 2025 🏅👗 Fashion on the Ration 2025 61/66 coupons (5 coupons silver boots)✒️Declutter 2024 🏅🏅🏅(DSis 🏅🏅)

I had both mine done last Saturday. I had them both in the same arm as I use the other arm for my walking stick. The worse thing about it was having to queue for so long. Fortunately, it was a nice day. Had a stiff arm for about 3 days other than that I'm fine.5
