Preparing for Winter V

Just started crocheting 2 new draft excluders as 2 of them went home with one of the grankids last winter. They have loads of expensive toys but the oddest thing s catch their eye. Winter seemed to arrive the last week or so cold and damp and one day the temp was 7 degrees at 12 noon. Sunny 🌞 today and loads of washing on the line. We are all electric so your advice on getting a little gas cooker is great will look for one.0

My new winter coat arrived yesterday. It’s so snuggly.

Have spent some of the summer holidays sourcing, washing and adjusting curtains for my patio doors, front door & archway into conservatory. I got some great bargains and have also mastered the art of taking up curtains!
I took a trip yesterday to a well known Swedish store and stocked up on candles and also got a couple of throws for the sofa in lovely autumnal colours.
We have a very wet day here in Berkshire, so I shall be taking some time to do a cupboard and freezer inventory in anticipation of return to work and school in a few weeks!
I'm not wishing summer away, I just want to be ready for autumn/winter so I can enjoy them!0 -
Ordered my new windows, will be fitted in October. Should make the house feel warmer than the existing badly fitting single glazed ones.
Will order smokeless coal and bioethanol this week. Need to get busy with curtains and drought excluders. Also look at building up food and comfort med supplies.
Busy times ahead. :rotfl:0 -
It is feeling decidedly autumnal here today. I have been working under my blanket this morning but have managed to nip out and cut back one of my huge roses in between the rain!
I'm going to get cracking on some winter prep this afternoon by having a good clean of the spare rooms and going through the winter woolies box. I do love a wooly hat but I think I have a number I don't wear that could go to charity. The rest will go through the wash so they are ready for when the weather turns.
I did manage to get a full length mac in the sale last week reduced from £69 to £18. It came in useful the very next day in the stormy weather!0 -
Yesterday I booked the chimney sweep to come. He should hopefully arrive this evening. Seemingly this will only cost £35. I thought that was a pretty good deal. I think it's been 2 years since we last got them cleaned. That's about the only bit of winter prep I've done so far!0

We've arranged the boiler service too this week to make sure all is in order for when we need to run the central heating in the really colder weather.0

I've tidied the 'fire stuffs' shelf in the understairs cupboard. We've enough fire starter materials but a big bag of kindling will need to be ordered with my wood. I've room now for the wood bricks that my sweep sells so when he comes I'll invest in some emergency bricks to keep indoors.
It feels good to be organised.
My daughters both need new winter coats this year, starting with the youngest Sept then eldest Oct as eldest has a good raincoat that can be layered under if need be. DH and I are good for coats.
My shawl is off the knitting needles, as are youngest's hat and cowl, eldest's hat is now being worked on. I'm slowly replacing my socks for knitted but that will be ongoing.
The winter car box needs arranging. The girls have new bed blankets so the old ones can go in the car.
I need salt for back yard de-icing.
I have accrued a nice buffer in the gas and electric account to not worry about putting the heating on when it gets colder and money has been saved incase the boiler dies this year. It's now 18 year old and was troublesome last year.
On that note enjoy the scorching temps over the weekend.0 -
Our new boiler is in and all new radiators so we should be toasty. Log burner is sitting in the garage waiting to be fitted, have a lovely man coming to Sort it all out and do something clever with bricks and oak. I've started chopping down the ivy strangled trees and have been stripping them back, huge pile of branches and trunks now for cutting up, all the foliage is getting dried and will go on next weeks bonfire.
New front windows have been ordered and should be going in in October, new front door too, I can see daylight around it so needs doing. Will save up for the back windows next year (they're all sound just very old).
Just put in a "store cupboard" order to be delivered next week, used all my stores up before we moved and feel the need to restock. We are now walking distance to supermarkets but on quite a steep hill so if it gets icy we won't be venturing out.
We're both ok for winter coats/clothes but both need a new dressing gown this year and I will probably need a new pair of boots after Christmas."Start every day off with a smile and get it over with" - W. C. Field.0
