painted white walls, modern square fire in an alcove with a fire board ceiling above, about 2` of black flue up to the alcove ceiling. Btw I fixed a flue thermometer to the flue. In the meantime I am flaking in this heat, expecting 34 in a few days, so will be living in a cave during the heat of the day, only emerging early morning and like a bat, at almost dark to water my plants

coping with this heat is almost like coping with freezing cold. I have closed the curtains, even the door curtain. It is hotter out than in and I am doing my best to try and keep it that way. I went out for a short walk to the shops and I was drenched, obviously need to drink lots more otherwise UTI will take control

Yes I too have drawn all the curtains.

Some of them are pretty sturdy washable ones and I,m wondering whether if I sprayed them lightly with water from an clean empty spray container and later opened the window when the sun has gone down to let a breeze through whether the water would have an evaporating effect and cool the affected rooms down a little ?

I have occasionally in the past washed these curtains, ironed them damp dry and rehung them back in a closed position with windows open to completely dry them and it has worked well and stops them creasing but never tried it as a cooling technique.

I was up at 5.15 today and watering `new` plants at the front, the outside air was much cooler than the house so I have most windows and doors open and there is a nice cool breeze coming through. I see that the temperature will be ramping up at 11 and I have until about 9 to get the jobs done because I am not moving faster than a sloth when it gets hot later. I will be sitting reading and drinking water

Morning everyone, not posted in ages but nice to "see" some familiar faces :)

Sort of in prep for winter, I need to sort through everyone's clothes and bedding this week - there are loads of things the kids have grown out of/are surplus to requirements, clothes DH and I haven't worn in ages, so off to the chazzer they're going.

We've just had the bathroom completely re-done, just flooring to sort, and it will be nice and cosy in there this winter, with new radiator and window!

Also decorating all 3 bedrooms, and need new curtains in all so will have a go at making again, at least in the littlies' rooms. I'd like some door curtains, and something lightweight for the large glass doors we have downstairs - despite them being well insulated I've found that due to the large area of glass it can still be cold. I'll have to get a pole made (got a good handyman!) and use some very light fabric.

Final job for the summer hols will be to get the chimney swept where our multi fuel stove sits.

Sorry for the waffle, nice to be back! :)

  • The chimney IS being swept as I type so that's one job out of the way and we've almost cleared the log store downstairs to the one upstairs and will now order in a big batch of logs to fill it again.

    Hi guys
My prepping mainly consists of crocheting a throw for my youngest son. Then I’ll start on one for my eldest son and his girlfriend.
Apart from that there’s not much I can do at the moment.
    Happy prepping

    Hi All,
My winter preps for this year began today with my coal delivery (summer discount on 30 sack-loads was a great incentive) and I have the chimney sweep booked in for the 12th.

I am also decluttering as much !!!! as I can, including working (eating) my way through tins of food stuff, so that I can actually see what I have and more importantly, what I LIKE and can sensibly replace.

When I am bored of the decluttering, I am sock knitting, which at a stretch could count as decluttering yarn AND prepping for winter!

I hope that everybody is well...keep posting please, I always read this thread and learn so much from other posters!

Well it is not very money saving but we are doing a lot of decorating at the moment. We are going to carpet the living room which is currently pine boards in the hope that this will make the room warm and cosy. We have also treated ourselves to new sofas. The old ones were hand me downs when we had them and we have had them 12 years. They are not to our taste and the frame is knackered. We have also treated ourselves to a new bed and drawers which will be hugely helpful as we just don't have enough storage.
The snug is still a shell and I'm hopping that is done by winter but we can't decide to put a 2nd log burner in.
