  • YES we're getting one as soon as we possibly can! The wood stove guy will send us some ideas for suitable models for our space and we'll drop down to the big showrooms and decide which we like and put in the order there and then. With luck we'll be up and working before Christmas!

I've been very happy with my Contura - more expensive than some, but I got an ex-display model.

I've been exporting a lot of my solar power recently (not today!) so yesterday I bought a cheap oil filled radiator. When my monitor shows sufficient spare being generated I can shove it on for a bit of localised heat.
  • The model I like best is a Stovax, in fact I think it's the one that I'd chosen in the showroom when we first visited. The flue is going to come from the back not the top which limits us to just a few models. We checked and the showroom has all 3 he's said will be suitable so we'll be able to see them and choose which we like the best. It's exciting as I feel that a proper stove makes the home, one of the biggest pleasures in life for me is laying a fire!
  • Mrs LW, are you thinking of getting a furry friend to spread itself on the hearthrug in front of your new stove? We have a rescue cat and he loves the fire lit. (I don't think he had ever seen a "proper" one before)

Our log delivery arrived this morning. I'd been slightly put out when I rang to book it, to be told that they were now booking for mid-November as so many people have now invested in woodburners; previously we've just had to wait a couple of weeks. But when I gave my address, she realised that we're local & have been customers for many years, though I always used to collect from them back when we were buying a sack at a time. (Back then we just had an open fire, which looked great but didn't produce much heat!) So she asked whether we'd be prepared to take a delivery at short notice, if they had a cancellation. I really wasn't sure that what we had left would get us through to mid-November, and there's usually someone here, so said yes, thinking we might get them before the end of October.

So when she rang at 8am this morning & asked if we could take delivery this morning, I jumped at it; after all, they'd already got our money. The logs were on our driveway within a couple of hours. One of our little woodsheds is neatly stacked now, but the other isn't finished yet! OH had decided to rebuild it, bigger & stronger, mostly from the remains of our old chicken shed. So the rest of the logs are stacked at the end of the driveway, and will be covered with a couple of old tarps to protect them from tomorrow's rain.

As DD2 & I were stacking, I made her laugh by telling her how my old Dad had taught me to stack wood, back in the late 60s; "It's easy!" he said, "Just like building a drystone wall, you just have to think where each log is pressing on the others and arrange it so that they fit together as neatly as possible and they're always pressing into the stack, never outwards." Dear Dad, I don't know when he thought his 10-year-old daughter had ever had the chance to build a drystone wall...

  • Oh my! we have paid for the stove we've opted for a Dik Geurts 'Ivar 5' with a wood burning hearth not a multi fuel and had only been home from the stove showroom half an hour when a phone call saying would 7th November be a convenient day for them to install it? OH YES!!! the engineer who came to do the fireplace inspection had said we might be lucky and get it installed by Christmas but November? absolutely smashing. Now we need logs and have worked out where to site the store out of the prevailing rain direction but will be able to keep it open fronted to let the wood breathe, so happy!

I've been and had a Google Lyn. Yes, I'm a Nebby Nora. My kind of stove. Lovely large viewing window, sleek while being robust and to the point. All systems go. November is next month!

  • What a lovely thing to say LP thank you so very much xxx.

I'd absolutely love a cat to lie in front of the stove Whiteguineapig but HWK is most definitely a 'dog' person and doesn't appreciate cats at all. There are quite a few living next door though, I think the neighbour feeds strays and has about 4 of her own (perhaps more) and I'm gradually making friends with them to the point where one will let me stroke him, the Siamese which is very cautious actually let me touch her nose and give her head a rub the other day and the ginger one that I know is a stray has stopped running away when I walk past. I'll have lots of outdoor feline pals and be happy with that. Mind, if one DID decide to be 'official' I think HWK would be it's favourite person, he has that effect on them xxx.
  • Oh thats nice, ours loves oh best too, I think he likes me but loves his dad best!
