There are a lot of us on here all doing similar things to get ourselves organised for winter. I like to think that every time I start feeling cold and put a thicker sweater on, or draw the curtains to keep out the cold there are lots of you out there probably doing exactly the same thing at the same time!.

It's great to read about all your activities and your hints. There is always something new to learn or be reminded about to do, and its nice to know we're not all shivering alone as the thermometer drops !
  • MUCH cooler here this morning as I found when using the bug eviction kit and putting out a large hairy house spider who has decided it was a good idea to take up residence on the landing! It was cooler yesterday so I've unearthed my down jacket, coat and gilet from the rail in the spare room and they are now hanging on the coat pegs in the kitchen. I wore the gilet yesterday with a lightweight jumper and stayed warm for the whole day!

We've uncovered the chimney in the fireplace and it has been used as an open fire, we were a little concerned that it was a 'token only' fireplace, so hopefully we'll get the go ahead to install an inset stove. The only problem is that the chimney isn't straight up from the fireplace but goes out sideways to the right. I'm sure there will be ways round this and at the very least we'll be able to install an open grate which will make this even more of a home than it is now. Looking forward to that first snuggly fire very much indeed.
  • 3°c outside this morning. Heating came on low, only needed the week before October can't be too bad, considering we have a toddler ave a five month old baby to factor in, it needs to be on mornings and bedtime etc.

Found some really nice long-sleeved PJ's in Primark on Saturday. Perfect for this time of year. Thin enough so you don't get too hot, but full coverage to take the chill off if, like me, you sleep with an arm outside of the duvet!

Still not got our heating on yet. Our old little mid-terrace really holds the heat well, and still feels cosy when it's 3 degrees outside.

You have to hope that your neighbours either side are chilly mortals and already have the heating on so that you can benefit ! We previously lived in a terraced property where one side was empty all winter and we really noticed the difference in that we were having to use more heating to compensate for the cold walls on one side of the house.

We also have one bedroom in this house over a garage and the temperature in room always seems slightly cooler in winter., especially in winter when the heating is never on overnight.

I wonder if both sides already have their heating on and that's why ours is warm? :D

TBH, It'll probably need to go on fairly soon, if only to get the towels in the bathroom drying properly.

He should be about here Lyn. :D hopefully he will tell you that people like the fuddle's have really old chimneys and their stove liner has to snake it's way up to the top in every direction. Hopefully he'll also tell you the chimney sweeps like the fuddle's use flex rods to not damage the snaking liner. Not a problem.

Please let there be stoves. Please. :D
  • He's here as I type, they've gone outside to look at the chimney BUT he's not limiting us to an inset stove, appears we can have a free stander WOOHOO!!!

Just done one of my regular little chores, not necessarily just for winter though - replacing all the little lavender anti moth sachets from Lakeland in my wardrobes to protect all my quality woollen clothes.

I sellotape them to the insides of all the wardrobe doors. When they expire after 3 months the sachet shows up with an END warning on it so you know to replace them. I also have a repeat occurrence facility in my computer diary which nudges me to do it every three months. I'm not normally so organised these days and rely on a bit of technology to remind me about these things.
