Preparing for Winter V

Here is the NHS information on sunlight and vitamin D.
The amount of flesh needed to be exposed and the time thereof depends on factors such as skin colouring, but all the places I have looked at in recent months (I have osteoporosis) state that there is insufficient UVB in the winter in the UK to make Vit D and we have to rely on stores/supplement.
I have agreed my own supplementation regime with my medics.
Yes - it's surprising. I am very active and am often out and about. I also (don't shout at me) rarely wear sun cream (but don't burn myself!) and my vitamin D is low and the drs told me to supplement. As it's not drastically low, I can just supplement with normal tablets from the chemist.
For those with period issues, I can recommend you look into high strength Omega 3 supplementation. Was very beneficial for me (must be high strength though, not just normal fish oil capsules).
Happy autumn equinox to all. I've swapped over to my "winter" blanket now. Def feels like it's on its way...LBM 11/06/2010: DFD 30/04/2013Total repaid: £10,490.310 -
I take high dose vitD capsules bought on amazon.
We get snow every year, already had a couple of frosty mornings - and the first snow of the winter has fallen on the Cairngorms. Hasn't risen above 10c here all day. I love winter! :j:j0 -
With regards to Vitamin D
I live on the mid west coast of Scotland. Whenever anyone is run down / ill etc. the first bloods the doc always checks is vitamin D levels. Just about everyone I know has been found to be vitamin D insufficient, even with good diets and eating fantastic seafood, and most people I know are taking supplements.

The fire has been on twice this week. It's on this evening. Bitter cold outside. DH has been fishing and was hail stoned upon. All coats are out and shall be worn regardless now. I think I'm ready. I know how this house works through winter now.0

I’ve got the slow cooker out, and have been heating up ‘something’ with lentils, chickpeas, veggie sausages and lots of vegetables. I’m not sure whether it’s a casserole, a curry, or what yet! It’ll all depend on what spices I add. I’m thinking of making dumplings though. And I’ve got lots of mashed potatoes in the freezer. I do love autumn food!0

I've found some Ikea curtains on the top of my wardrobe so I'm going to take a look and see how many of those I have and what windows they'll fit.
I'll definitely some kind of fleece attachment with those though as they are only thin.0 -
Bit of a frost this morning.
Jobs for the weekend which I must get done:
- fix up the fallen insulation board in the cellar
- buy a cheap fleece to use as a front door curtain
- get some thermal liners for the lounge curtains
- put the winter duvet on.
- get the winter clothes out, jumpers etc
- buy some fleecy jogging bottoms for in the house
- get the gas fire serviced so I can use it instead of a fan heater.
Long term, look into getting a digital thermostat as the analogue one is pretty rubbish. And price up changing a couple of radiators. The old ones are flat panel with no fins on the back. The lounge one is huge (about 1800cm long) & that'll really help the room get warmer as it struggles a bit in winter with the cellar below, laminate floor & very high ceiling. With a thick curtain liner hopefully it'll give it a boost.0 -
Was 4 degrees here this morning!
Stock up of logs required for the stove, coals supplies are good...
Winters coming, though we're expecting 18 degrees on Wednesday before it drops back down again... weird.0 -

My friend gave me 2 sets of space curtains for DS2 when her sons had outgrown them - I lined them with fleece and put them double and they are the warmest curtains in our house - but heavy! After they pulled down the cheap curtain track I had them on, I got a heavy duty one and they stay up well now.
What I did in my living room was add a fleece over the net curtain and behind the blind. I made a casing at the top of the fleece and put a net wire through it and hook in to the net curtain eyes on the window frame. I just twist it round in the day and hold it in place with the plant pots on the windowsill, but the fleece over the glass in the front door has a wide ribbon from a present tying it in a pretty bow in the day. Well, till it's colder and then the front door fleece stays closed all day - it's a pale lilac so it doesn't make the hall feel too dark, but does help with the cold - a little bit.0 -
The curtains are singles, but that will do for my bedroom and the dining room which are both smallish windows.
I just need to buy some fleece for them and then as I don't sew at all, I was going to get some of the tape that you iron and it sticks things together. I have no idea what it's called or where to get it though so if someone can help, that'd be great.
The curtain poles in Wilkos are pretty good price wise and they also have some thermal blackout curtains that seem good too, but I'll also take a look on Amazon and see if they have anything cheaper.
The other things I need to get are a big cozy throw for my bed and an electric blanket and also a hot water bottle for sitting downstairs. I have a blanket for the lounge room but it's seen better days so if I see anything to replace it for a good price then I might be tempted.
My gas and electric DD got a bit ridiculous last year so I'm really hoping that by spending a bit of money and time doing these things I can get it to a reasonable level this winter.0
