Hi everyone, I've seen on the daily mail that we are on for snowmaggedon again:rotfl:
It is based on the heatwave so we will have SNOW??

But I'm sure the last beast from the East was based on the previous hottest days. If I can remember rightly by Dave KING???? He predicted the snow and he was right.

    Any thoughts

Now any ideas how I can stop sparking like the national grid when wearing my jumpers I seem to pick up a lot of static electric :):):)

I know you can buy anti-static sprays but if you want to make your own, here are two suggestions:

    1) Mix 2tblsp liquid fabric conditioner and 1 cup of water (about 250ml) in a spray bottle, shake well and lightly mist clothes. I seem to recall you use white vinegar in place of fabric conditioner though so here's a more "natural" spray .....
    2) Mix 1 cup of witch hazel with 5 drops of essential oil (any fragrance will do) as above.

I haven't tried them so can't vouch for how effective they are. ;)

The potato plants have died off but I’ll harvest those - and the carrots - when we get back from our hols. Any suggestions for storage? This is the first time I’ve grown carrots.

Mmm, he was on our local radio station last weekend (Radio Leeds) and (for us) he said we wouldn't get any snow this winter! Cold and frosty yes, but no snow. Maybe it depends on where you live? :D

I had my chimney swept this morning (usually get this done in May, so very late this year) and as it has been raining on and off all day I decided to light a small fire...I know that it isn't actually cold outside but this small act really cheered me up :)
I am trying desperately to de-clutter the house and had come to a bit of a stand-still but I now feel motivated again. My plan is to have the ground floor of the house totally sorted by half term (yikes, only 4 weeks away for my school), so that I can get on with making cakes, puddings, chutneys etc in that holiday, without feeling that I should be doing something else.
I will also arrange for a coal delivery during half term. I pay monthly for my fuel and am in credit by quite a lot, so thankfully that should be my solid fuel covered for this winter, whatever weather we get!

The fire has just been topped up and I now think that I will make a stew tomorrow (I lurve stew), which will feed me for the next few days and cause some jealousy when I take some in to work for lunch :D

Keep the tips coming everyone, I may not post very often but I ALWAYS read this thread!

  • We've had rain in various strengths since early this morning and it feels chilly and has since early this afternoon. I dug out the throws which we've snuggled under, we've had lots of hot drinks and I've just drawn the curtains which makes a difference (perhaps not to the actual temperature) to how warm you 'feel'. He Who Knows has decided to have a hot bath and wrap up in his warmer dressing gown and I'm making us a hot supper so hopefully we'll be warm this evening. It's feeling very autumnal out there today and we have heavy rain forecast for much of tomorrow which will keep the temperature subdued so we'll go for coffee in one of the garden centres and warm up there but we won't put the heating on, I'd rather add a layer than do that this early in the year. Roll on October 1st and hopefully initiate the installation of a woodstove. If that's not possible we'll re-open the chimney and settle for an open wood burner grate to keep us warm. They still make them, and we'll hopefully be warm then no matter what the weather decided to do outside!

Fell asleep in armchair this afternoon under fleecy throw and woke feeling frozen so we've yielded and put the heating on for an hour for the first time. Actually the room temperature was showing 20 degrees but I think when you're not mobile yiu feel the cold more so althiight we didn,t make our October 1 target, just having the heating on for an hour has made a big difference.

I picked most of my remaining ripe tomatoes this morning in the drizzle. Today's heavy rain with more forecast tomorrow suggests the 8ndian summer may be over so I probably need to rethink picking the remanivng green ones too and putting them on trays to ripen indoors. This wet chill will finish my courgettes off I suspect!

And don't want to panic about dropping temperatures too early but maybe time to think about switching to our heavier duvet too.

Vitamin D is the sunshine vitamin!!

Egg yolks, oily fish, milk and orange juice are good sources but often food can be fortified with it too.

Getting your face or chest into the sunshine is the best way to be fair - safety first obviously!
  • Yuck, we have had a horrible day here ,it's been chucking it down all day and been really dark,I had to go into town and it was miserable
I managed to get an electrician out to replace my room thermostat a couple of weeks ago, this was a cue for the weather to warm up again so I haven't had to use it until today,my house was cold when I got home but also felt very damp so I put my heating on for an hour,I'm so relieved I finally got it done

Here is the NHS information on sunlight and vitamin D.

The amount of flesh needed to be exposed and the time thereof depends on factors such as skin colouring, but all the places I have looked at in recent months (I have osteoporosis) state that there is insufficient UVB in the winter in the UK to make Vit D and we have to rely on stores/supplement.

I have agreed my own supplementation regime with my medics.
