  • The weather forecast has just told us that we're going to be in for an interesting time on Saturday here on the south coast so I'll be walking the plots and making sure everything that can be is put inside of anchored down in as secure a place as I can find. I'll make us a stew on Friday that could easily be reheated on the camping stove if we should get power loss and we'll light the wood stove to keep warm. The solar lights are fully charged and I have lots of tealights and candles and can put a hand on the hot water bottles. Know where the BIG flask is so I'll fill that with boiling water last thing on Friday night and know we'll have a hot cuppa Saturday morning whatever happens! What have I missed?

Geese went over this afternoon. :)

    Reminded me of this

    Something Told the Wild Geese
    by Rachel Field

    Something told the wild geese
    It was time to go.
    Though the fields lay golden
    Something whispered,-'Snow.'

    Leaves were green and stirring,
    Berries, luster-glossed,
    But beneath warm feathers
    Something cautioned,-'Frost.'

    All the sagging orchards
    Steamed with amber spice,
    But each wild breast stiffened
    At remembered ice.

    Something told the wild geese
    It was time to fly,
Summer sun was on their wings,
    Winter in their cry.

Don't know why but it makes me cry.
Not dim ;) .....just living in soft focus :p
  • The sky has been Eyoreish all day (gloomy gloomy!) and we've had a light rain shower or two BUT it's most peculiarly warm out there, muggy and close, most odd for October weather. The forecast for Saturday is for the south coast in particular and we've a deep and nasty low pressure area coming right across us, another of these seemingly never ending Atlantic depressions that ride the Jet Stream one after the other. They are predicting high winds and coastal very high and damaging tides all along the south coast. Luckily we're about 1/4 mile inland from the river and up a slope from the beach then up another from our road so hopefully we'll not have problems but the riverside properties and the pub down there may be flooded at ground and basement level. We've seen it a couple of times since we came here so I hope the 'blow' is less than anticipated for everyones sakes.

So touching. Haven't heard that poem before Doveling, thank you so much. Love it when some one just captures the moment, so clever. Now I'm off to google Rachel Field :)
Just read your post too Mrs LW hope that the weather men are wrong. Stay safe.

Yes, I am remaining anchored down and hunkered in. Had to child mind 75 minutes away this morning, I have a job I really needed to get done for winter but only cottoned on 2 days ago, an outside masonry garden wall really needs re-painting, in case of selling and not a job to do in winter. Paint came today, yesterday bought very cheap roller and tray and I looked at the forecast when I got back. Nice opportunity from 3 today as will be dry until 3 tomorrow. I did it, took one hour of very speedy working. Brilliant paint, johnsons masonry paint, quick drying. Capricorns, they never let the grass grow

I hate the wind, really do

Old fashioned analog ‘phone? So that you can still make land-line calls in a power cut? Mobile masts start to go down pretty soon after a power cut and as all traffic moves across to mobile, line access can be difficult.

Although I have an analog ‘phone, I also have the normal phone and the wi-fi router powered through a 1kva UPS. When the power goes down, I can still check on-line to see if my postcode has been reported to the power company and make calls on the land-line.
  • Thank you, we have one of those in the store room which I'll look out. The weather forecast this evening puts the storm 'Brian' slightly to the west of the UK and is saying the most impact will be on the west country and west wales but that we along the south coast will still get some very strong winds with vicious gusts in and some very rough seas and high tides.
