We have dark brown thick velvet curtains in our bedroom and in dds' bedroom; I don't really like them and do not remember where or from whom we got them, but they fit and do their job. I only realised this morning how well they do their job: we have double glazing, and we had turned the radiator on when we went to bed, so the room would warm up when the ch came on in the morning. The room was sooo lovely warm at 8am, until I asked dh to open the curtains so I could see the trees and the snow: the temperature in the room fell with (at a guess) 5 degrees and was defo uncomfy! Are you wombling, too, in '22? € 58,96 = £ 52.09Wombling in Restrictive Times (2021) € 2.138,82 = £ 1,813.15Wombabeluba 2020! € 453,22 = £ 403.842019's wi-wa-wombles € 2.244,20 = £ 1,909.46Wombling to wealth 2018 € 972,97 = £ 879.54Still a womble 2017 #25 € 7.116,68 = £ 6,309.50Wombling Free 2016 #2 € 3.484,31 = £ 3,104.590

siebrie, really good proof of insulation working. I sometimes forget to go up to draw my heavy curtain but anytime after daylight has to be good. Will make more effort, in fact will do it when I draw my heavy living room curtain
I have changed the stove timings, to only come on early morning at the moment. I am finding that candles are doing their job perfectly and am loving the light. Not getting cold at all with a woollen polo on and warm knitting in my lap
You got me thinking, dark brown velvet curtains, perhaps would look very lovely with added braid, either vertical or horizontal or appliqued strips of fabric or felt or braid with felt flowers
I get this knitting bug at this time of year, it just churns off my steaming needles. Must be that hibernation thing as I am perfectly happy alone with knitting and radio. Trying to get out a few times a week on a short cycle, just to keep my heart turning over0 -
De lurking hoping for little January excitement at hearing everyone's news regarding the snowy weather forecast.... Once again we have been left out, being in the far South West we seem to only be blessed with Liquid sunshine, rather than any of the white stuff... Please feel free to tell me all about it, I am sooooo over preparing for blizzards and only being able to watch it via live webcam in Russia :-).... Stay safe and warm to all those in the thick of it xxThriftkitten

Just filled all my bird feeders up.
Got me wondering whether it's better to fill them in the evening or in the morning.
Any thoughts? Not dim.....just living in soft focus

Snowing up north and been on and off a bit here too Thriftkitten. Lomond Mountain Rescue out for the second time in 3 days looking for 4 walkers lost on Ben Lomond in blizzards and 80mph winds. They should fine them when they find them - nobody should be out on the hill in this weather!0

I'm guessing morning, then it won't have frozen over night. But if you are a late riser maybe better as the birds are up pretty early.
Sorry, not much help there was I!?0 -
I have been feeling so cold the last few nights!
Last night I wore one of my long jersey dresses to bed and felt much warmer. It reminded me of the nightdresses my Gran used to wear. Maybe she had the right idea as it kept my sides warm and didn't ride up like a pyjama top would have.:)0 -
I think most of our forebears wore 'flannel' nightclothes (think brushed cotton/wynciette) and petticoats of the same thing in a bid to stay warm in the colder weather. Snug and warm but they must have taken forever to dry in the winter months with no heating in most homes other than a range in the kitchen and an open fire.
I should have said the female ones wore petticoats as the men mostly wore flannel longjohns!0 -

I was cold last night too. Decided to leave my thermal socks on and wear a fleece over my jami top. What a difference it made. I slept much better and it was very handy when I nipped to the loo. No need for a dressing gown. Think that I'll do the same thing tonight...;)The beautiful thing about learning is nobody can take it away from you.
Thanks to everyone who contributes to this wonderful forum. I'm very grateful for the guidance and friendliness that I always receive from you.

It's been regularly dropping to 0°c overnight outside here and we've found that having the heating off by 10pm and on by 6am isn't cutting it. It gets cold enough by 3-4am that the baby was waking up with it. We did try him with different layers and fleece sleep suit etc but I wasn't happy with it and DsS's bedroom has an external vent we can't block and his room was freezing and waking him up which with his medical issues, isn't good.
So we now have it set to just stay in and maintain 19-20°c all the time. Downstairs is pretty open plan so I also use the fan heater a bit if I'm in all day with the baby.Credit Card & Overdraft Debts Jan 2012: £16,000+ [STRIKE] Credit Card & Overdraft Debts Sep 2013: £13,023 [/STRIKE]
