Cairngorm mountain rescue busy yesterday - two sets of climbers lost on the hill in blizzards already. Team leader Willie Anderson described conditions as "ferocious".

A full on blizzrd already. Suddenly brought back memories of white outs on the lake district fells, in my old days when I did mountain leadership. Was scary on snowdon too, crampons and full kit. I am glad these people are ok. Satisfying for the mountain rescue people. Lol, just brought back another memory,
out training doing sweep searches with the raf mountain rescue.

Deceptive out there today, sunny indoors but one heck of a chill out. I have ordered a luxury vest, merino/silk. Got to give in to getting older0 -
I was up and out early this morning. It's a beautiful sunny day, but the wind is very chilly. I've got washing out and it's drying well.
DH is off work today with a bad cold, the living room is nice and toasty with the fire on.
I've been into town and got some thick, warm tights, pyjamas, jumper and work trousers. I've also made a start on the Christmas shopping.
Kittie- thank you for the link, some good tips.
Mar - stay safe and warm.

trouble with winter hibernation and not being busy out doors, is that I have searched high and low for sweets I put by for the grandchildren. Yes, I ate them, every blooming one of them. I must be the original hamster. Flipping mouth hunger, nothing to do with stomach hunger0

When DH used to say to me that I could not possibly be hungry I would reply "No, but my teeth are bored!""This site is addictive!"

Heavy battering hail and rain here, and the wind howling through my double glazing. Cat and I have just sent the RV out in it for more coal0

Mar, why don`t you get him to dig a cellar with steps down, so that he can haul it up in the dry
you can cover the entrance with a trap door and a rug

DH soent most of yesterday afternoon chopping and sawing wood for our stove, bless him, we now have a full wood shed and some more logs to chop. We should be ok for this winter without using the CH too much.
However after reading the link that Kittie posted (thank you) I am a bit alarmed, perhaps I should heat the unused rooms if it gets too cold, at least every few days, to avoid damp mould forming. Finally I'm an OAP and can travel free (in London at least!).0 -
I only have one big rad in my house, it is the master rad in the utility. The bathroom rads are normal size. No rads in the main living areas and the tiniest skirting rads in the bedrooms and study, none in hall and landing. The house has heat sink walls and floor ie they absorb the heat and let it out slowly. Just to say that Caterina, I don`t need to keep any of the bedroom rads on but it is important as the house fabric can cool and then is very very hard to warm up again. I am unlikely to get condensation here but could envisage the north facing rooms becoming very cold without that trickle of heat input. I keep my carving tools in the north facing study and noticed a teeny bit of rust on a couple, even though kept in a cupboard. That rad has gone on, I did used to keep it off0

I think that the wood stove tends to warm most of the fabric of the house, but I will have to keep an eye on the north facing, unused bedrooms. Especially DD's. When she moved out, after years of being a stroppy teen and refusing to let me clean her room, we found the back wall behind her bed thick with black mould! Finally I'm an OAP and can travel free (in London at least!).0
