Tesco Value snobbery??

..... have a friend who will use her Harrods carrier bag to carry almost anything in as it's got Harrods on the front ,soppy mare, who gives a fig what's on the label Only people who have so little going on in their lives I think.
My ex-next-door-neighbour used to keep a couple of Harrods carrier bags in the glove compartment of his car - specially for hiding his Aldi/Lidl shopping in. Same guy used to take his M&S bags to the market when clothes shopping. What a Wally!0 -
I could'nt care less what people think about what I buy.If I can get something cheaper that's as nice and fits the purpose I want it for,I'm more than happy.0

In my opinion, it's not about how much it cost but what you do with it when you get it home. I'm a pretty good vegetarian cook, and have produced some great meals containing Value or own brand ingredients. If I can do this, spending a fraction of what it would've cost me to buy 'posh' ingredients, then all power to me, I say!
I've also been making my own bread for years, and when white flour is required I always use Tesco Value with no problem.
The only value things I refuse to buy are eggs, for ethical reasons. And my Sweetie absolutely refuses to eat anything other than Heinz baked beans; I tried to dish up Tesco own brand once but it was spotted in the first mouthfull!

Have you tried the Branston beans? i think they are soo much nicer than heinz and you can often get them on offer for 4 tins for £1em x
Proud to be dealing with my debts0 -
Hi mum2many!
Thanks for that! We have tried Branston's beans, and I agree they are very nice. To be honest, we buy either brand, depending on which has an offer on. For example, in this month's shop we bought Heinz as they were doing a 'buy 4, get 2 free' offer.

I don't look at the value stuff in my cupboard and think "oh dear, look how poor I am", I look at it and think "wow, how stupidly expensive would it have been if I'd bought branded stuff, aren't I good for saving so much money!".
Half the time (if not more) the value stuff is from the same manufacturer as the branded stuff anyway.

Why? Increasing food, fuel and clothes prices, job losses, increased interest rates on mortgages and debts. And, that is just the beginning.

 Was loading a pile of Basics tomatoes into my trolley one time, and some woman walked past and said "poor thing" to me, no doubt feeling very sorry for me loading up my trolley with shock horror, Basics items...
I didn't know whether to laugh, cry, or hit her
It doesn't worry me in the slightest, but I can see how some people might be a bit funny about buying Value/Basics/Smartprice if they've had family or workmates make negative comments previously. But I don't care! I'll try Basics/Value - if I don't like it, move on to the next level, if I like it I'll keep buying it
What I don't understand though, is why anyone would be snobbish or funny about Aldi and Lidl? Surely they are just a German (?) chain of stores that have arrived in the UK, so are therefore selling different ranges and stuff? I just don't get it!
Do wish they'd build a Lidl in Cambridge - got an Aldi which isn't always on the most convenient side of the city for me. But why get a German supermarket when we could have yet another vastly overpriced designer clothes shop
Oh and thanks for the tips about Tesco value dishwasher stuff - we have been using the Tesco "environmentally friendly ones" (or at least that's what they are claimed to be) so will give the Value ones a whirlDFW no.554 - Proud to be dealing with my debts :TDAVID TENNANT CAN PROBE ME WITH HIS SONIC SCREWDRIVER ANYTIME...:AFLYING THE FLAG FOR THE CAMBRIDGE BOOTS TARTS :happyhear0 -
Great thread :T
A valid point to make to those who will not eat Value goods is that there is NO Tesco Stripy factory producing all the Stripy goods. Where are Stripy goods are produced? - in the same factories as named brands.
Producing own label products are how named brands manage to keep their factories running all year round. Products have different packaging but in most cases the same or very similar products.
Like others I am selective about the things I buy and there are certain things I wouldnt buy - value meat or eggs. But as a reformed part time label/MOC snob I am amazed at the savings I am making by trying value products and using MOC's. I dont often compromise on Toileteries but as a Bootser I get most of them for next to nothing anyway. I have also started collecting Tesco Points and am using the SB vouchers so toileteries a plenty here!
I do decant some things for ease of use and admit to puting my lidls coffee in a Kenco jar (not one person has noticed!) but on the whole I am extremely proud of my bargains and the money I have saved thanks to this wonderful site! :T

Value products are a bit of a joke - it's like perfumes that are sold at prices more expensive than the finest champagne (or even printer ink!!!) that are produced in factories such as those owned by lever (maker of Cif etc).
Can you imagine value 'gucci' perfume?
Having just popped out to the local Mr T at lunch to pick up a few items, I was annoyed to find a complete lack of value products and something I hadn't really noticed before - different stores stock different value products. My local one doesn't do value scampi, nor does it do value cream cleaner (the whole reason I popped in in the first place!). But the local one to work is different to the local one at home. At work value cherry tomatoes are 22p a box. At home Mr T charges 44p for exactly the same product. I'm not sure how that works to be honest... The stores are only 20 miles from each other.Tim0
