I followed 'Closed' suggestions exactly when XP support was about to end and this included how to install Free Avast. Which I did, how could it not be the correct program?.

We wouldn't know the guide was there if you hadn't pointed us in the right direction. So you can take the credit for being helpful.

Why not perform a factory refresh and then update all the way until Windows 8.1 Update 3?
It's this one

I have one of these portable hard drives to do a back up but it needs setting up and until I'm sure everything is ok with the laptop I'm afraid to connect the two.

(OH has a mac so we got one of these each, but I have to format it for windows. More fun and games for later !)0 -

The CPU is a bit weedy. It would be a good idea to keep that machine lean and mean. Perhaps also disable HP bundled software and other items from starting with Windows.
Refresh shouldn't affect your files, but you should keep a copy of your important data separate anyway.0 -
Thanks NiftyDigits
Clean up is still in progress so using mobile to post. Good job laptop has no feelings, weedy cpu indeed lol
For £250 18mths back from JL it seemed a bargain and I just wanted something reasonable to surf, do admin, watch a bit of tv and load and store photos and films. I have libre office and amz music and that's it other than what it came with. I understand some hp stuff is bloatware but not sure what.
thanks

If you use CCleaner to do your clean-ups you can select which cookies etc to keep.
Very useful for forum, gaming and banking logins
You also get a registry cleaner along with it. An oversize reg file can really slow things up.0
