Disk Cleanup, To Delete or Not To Delete ?

Hi,

Trying to improve a sluggish laptop and so have looked at disk clean up and would like to know if it would be a good idea to delete any of the following or will it cause other issues. Any assistance will be appreciated as I'm a relative novice.

419 kb Set up logs files
1.44 mb System error memory dump files
1.98 mb Temporary files
4.71 gb Temporary windows installation files
603 mb Windows update clean up
21.1 mb Windows defender
6.67 mb Per user archived windows error reporting
1.04 mb System archived windows error reporting

I'm guessing I should probably leave the windows defender stuff as thats the only security I have at present. I tried avast but it seemed to slow stuff down even more.

Thanks

SG:)

ps I'm using a hp windows 8 laptop

    You can delete all suggested.

It doesn't delete Defender, just files created by Defender that you don't need.

Will it make things run better/ faster ?

    No.
If it is slow, you may have other issues.

"Since installing Avast on my PC (at the suggestion of Closer when Security Essentials ceased its support) my PC also slows down on occasions, but its free so I put up with it. Rather annoying though that it keeps asking me to pay a fee if I want some obscure things that it has detected removed."

    Hmmmm

Have been trying to decide wether to upgrade to 8.1 but aren't sure.

Have scanned with spybot, malwarebytes and avast. All now uninstalled. Also scanned with other things which I've now forgotten. Am running out of ideas. Have had problems since end of August, in September I tried to restore back to mid August, but that didn't help either.

Oh and I have recently tried firefox instead of IE and thats even worse at times, especially with maps.

    Brand name and model number?

Why not perform a factory refresh and then update all the way until Windows 8.1 Update 3?

That is neither the behaviour of Avast nor MSE.

You have inadvertently installed some other program.

    Still running XP??

Yes! and Avast works well except for these infernal popups.

It is not Avast that is asking you to pay. You have installed something else.

You can't even post with quotes. Your machine needs updating.

Just noticed posts from a couple of years ago of people complaining about the nagging popups to upgrade to the paid version. So perhaps it is Avast.
Perhaps you should upgrade your OS anyway.

I followed 'Closed' suggestions exactly when XP support was about to end and this included how to install Free Avast. Which I did, how could it not be the correct program?.
