Displaying number plates on private land

What is the law on having legible number plates when parking on private land? Now tax disks aren't required (with the number plate visible), if someone were to cover their plate, or put a different plate on their car, would they avoid getting a ticket?

I mean private car parks, policed by the sharks.
If you were to take plates off, or cover them over, is that allowed under the RTA? This would surely stop the sharks in their tracks. They'd have to tamper with the car to remove the cover, which would be illegal wouldn't it?0 -
There are plenty of posters here who cover their plates before driving into or out of a Supermarket car park.
Another tip is to seriously dither driving out of any retail park, so that the impatient person behind you, tailgates your car.
Not that we encourage long overstays because we don't, and certainly we never condone not paying a P&D fee. But to escape the scammers' spy cameras and some random fake PCN, yes you could cover your plates (but remember to remove the cover as soon as you are out as you can't cover plates on the public Highway).PRIVATE 'PCN'? DON'T PAY BUT DON'T IGNORE IT (except N.Ireland).

I normally would agree with anything you post but this can't be a 'tip' surely?
Encouraging frustration and potentially dangerous driving, especially given the number of bumps that occur in car parks isn't good practice at all.
Also, having had to make a claim from someone for a bump in a car park, I am sure that as the land has public access it is treated as part of the highway by police (which is what they said to me) so I can't see this as being legal either and anyone considering it should be aware of that.
That said, the issue of removing things from the vehicle is true. You will see bikes parked on the pavement in London with black bin liners taped over the reg plate. The bike is not technically on the highway and the parkies can't remove the bag to ticket the bike. Again, not legal but shows it can work.What if there was no such thing as a rhetorical question?0 -
Interesting, as the Carriageway, Footway and Verge are all part of the Highway. And parking on the Footway in London is an offence.0

Actually it usually is legal. The bikes are usually parked on the pavement lights which belong to the building so are private property. Covering the number plate is just a lot easier than appealing a never ending stream of tickets from dimbo parking parasites0 -
a car part is part of the road structure , I know several young "idiots" in corsa,s that have been charged with incorrectly spaced (non valid) number plates when having there meets.
which do you want , a fine from PC Plod , of £60 or a *fine from a shark,
* unenforceable invoice
at least you can tell shark face to pee off0 -

But still considered to be part of the footway, there was a case of a someone parking their motorcycle on their own land losing at court in the above circumstances.0 -

QuestionsIf one only covered ones plates on going out how would the scammers 'systems' know you have left? I presume they would not. But as they have a record of one's reg on coming in could they not ticket one any way? Or would that not be a possibility for them as one could simply state you did leave within their time limit and its not the driver's fault if their cameras are faulty?
