Can a NHS dentist just remove me from their list!?

That's a tad harsh bearing in mind you agree my past dentist behaved immorally.0 -
I find it difficult to read any criticism of any of the dentists/specialists involved in any of Toothsmiths postings.
I also think there is a problem if you think it harsh that you are directed towards honesty with a health care professional.
It would seem the root cause of some of your complaints about previous dentists, consultants appears to be communication and starting with yet another dentist and considering a less than honest relationship will continue your last few decades of unsatisfactory treatment.0 -
I don't think they've behaved 'immorally'.
I think seeing an NHS primary care dentist, you're going into a system that really isn't set up to properly investigate and deal with the highly complex problems you obviously have.
I can appreciate your frustrations, but showing the frustrations by banging off complaints isn't going to help you get a solution to your pain, and just gives dentists dealing with you the 'get out of jail free' card of the 'Broken down relationship'.
Every new dentist you see will have to work through the same processes (In case the dentist before really was rubbish and missed something basic) and so you will take a few steps backwards again whilst the same basic things are eliminated and possible causes are worked through.
Good luck with the Eastman clinic. That probably is the best place you can be referred to. Be nice to them, and be helpful.
Don't be too cross about your consultant's referral to them being rejected initially. Clinics like this get a lot of referrals - and many hospital departments, in order to keep waiting lists down, now employ completely non-clinical people to vet the referral letters! It is irrelevant these days how urgent someone's needs are - if the letter doesn't contain some of the words these untrained numpties are told are important on a list they are given, then the referral is rejected! It can be hugely frustrating for clinicians who are writing letters in the belief someone with a brain rather than a semi-trained monkey is reading it!How to find a dentist.
1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.0 -

I'm not sure who you are referring to.brook2jack wrote: »I also think there is a problem if you think it harsh that you are directed towards honesty with a health care professional.
Unfortunately if the healthcare professionals you refer behave unethically and are quite dishonest this gives rise to issues of trust. Unfortunately I would like to be completely honest but bearing in mind my history with these people I find it extremely difficulty to have an open conversation as I have already mentioned on this thread.
I would further argue that these healthcare professionals are not very professional in the manner in which they behave in an over-active self-preserving mindset.brook2jack wrote: »It would seem the root cause of some of your complaints about previous dentists, consultants appears to be communication and starting with yet another dentist and considering a less than honest relationship will continue your last few decades of unsatisfactory treatment.
I respectfully disagree. I never asserted I would be dishonest and even if I were to be dishonest about being unethically removed from 'professional' care how on earth would this impact on future care? Please explain?0 -

I think they behaved highly immorally - sorry.
All I asked was why there was a potential discrepancy in an x-ray and to have discussions put in writing and the next thing I know I'm being booted out of the practice because of a 'breakdown in the professional relationship'. Is that usual practice? How I am meant to have an open discussion and one with good faith with people like that?
I'm usually very nice and pleasant but the complaints process is there for a reason - to deal with dubious activity like this. I don't see why I should accept that and I simply won't.0 -

who are you taking to the GDC and what is your basis?0 -

As my health condition amounts to a disability (for the purposes of the Equality Act 2010) the complaint is of unlawful discrimination.
As toothsmith has already touched upon, it is far more convenient for these types of dentists to remove me from their patient lists than to deal with my presentation in a caring and reasonable manner.0 -
what do you want the GDC to do to the dentist? I would say again as I said before, I really dont think the GDC will give you what you want. I still think the NHS systems of complaints would have been far better. The GDC will not get you seen faster, will not get you any compensation and will not get you access to higher skilled practitioners. All they can do is take punitive action against your dentist IF they decide they did something wrong. That action may be nothing if the dentist shows insight, it may be conditions of practice, it may place requirements of courses and skill development, suspension or erasure if serious enough .... none of that will help you. They are there to protect the public at large and if they do not think that dentist is a danger they may do nothing.0

Also I would argue that discrimination against you would also be an NHS issue as the contract states we can not discriminate and its the contract you would be treated under.0

Thanks welshdent old chap.
I plan to bring a complaint against this character through both channels. I'm just waiting on clarity as to where to present the NHS complaint.
It's fair to say this dentist is not exactly on my Christmas card list so if he gets a suspension or any punitive action taken against him then I would be most pleased.0
