Personal finance software

  • I used to be a happy and heavy user of Quicken, which I first used some 20+ years ago. When I decided I ought to update my version to something a little more modern (I was using Quicken 2000 which is essentially a windows 95 version updated to work on XP etc) I found to my horror that it was no longer supported outside the USA (Microsoft had bought Intuit!). I tried a version of Quicken 2007 bought from the internet but it needed fixes which I could not get.

I then tried many other financial packages. Some (most) were too complicated for my needs and/or were very expensive with annual fees; others too simple; some did not even work. Others (eg MSMoney) had also stopped being supported.

An absolute killer was that I wanted to convert my 20 years'worth of Quicken data (QIF files) as there was no way I would retype that amount of material for 12 different sets of accounts.

I did at last hit on Bank Genie :T. It had the makings of what I needed and a very responsive author. We produced Bank Genie version 4 which has full facilities for importing QIF files to make BG files.

I cannot understand the odd comment about it being 20 years old.

It is worth a try (which doesnt cost).
  • ok, if I want to buy the latest Microsoft Money which was ever made (as I understand it is no longer made and no longer supported) which version would that be?
Also to put it on a mac I'd need to buy the Microsoft software to run it on, which one would this be? Microsoft XP or Vista? (as I believe no point in getting anything newer than that as they stopped doing microsoft money and I would not use windows for anything else but MS Money :D )

The final version of Money for the UK market was 2005 - it's available for free now. One link confirmed working is: http://money.mvps.org/downloads/files/2005/Money2005-UK-QFE2.exe

Sorry I can't really help you with the OSX query, but if you need to run Windows in a VM then I'd be looking at Windows 7 as a minimum. It might also be worth looking to see if Wine works under OSX and if Money will run in that. Such a setup will hopefully cost nothing more than a bit of your time.

"We"? It is usually common courtesy to declare your interest. If I were you I'd spend a few pennies on someone to fix up your website. It does look 20 years old even if that app doesn't. Witness "Our Bank Genie Pro 4 and Bank Genie 4 products have not yet been reviewed as yet. The original Bank Genie was reviewed by Computer Shopper Magazine and appeared in the Feb 06 issue."

OP: Why don't you load the App Store on your mac. Some of the popular packages have free/trial versions available. Then you can see what suits your needs. I see in the top ten are Moneywiz (which I've used for 2-3 years), Moneydance (which I used 2-3 years before that), and iBank (which I used 2-3 years before that). I see there are another half dozen to try, with reviews to read. I would be surprised if any of them couldn't import QIFs. I've never found a perfect package and choose based on the relative good/poor features of each.

As similar case to the OP I'm also looking for a decent Mac supported app as it seems Quicken looks good but isn't supported in the UK any longer. I've opted for MoneyWiz as it looks decent and I personally don't need anything advanced.

I'll try to install Microsoft Money on my Mac later this week. Forgot to put it in my bag and left it at work today, so can't try tonight.
  • I use personal accountz on my laptop and an app on my iphone called spending tracker. Both break expenses into category and you can create line graphs, bar charts or pie charts.

I've just tried moving from GnuCash to MoneyManagerEx, mainly because it looks more modern, and better reporting. But there isn't a simple conversion process. Transfers between accounts dont seem to import :(.

Also is MoneyManagerEx a double book keeping system?

Sorry to hijack this thread, but has anyone used both gnucash and moneymanagerex?

It will be quite a task to move from the former so i want to know if it will be worth it or not...

    Any advice much appreciated.
