The one weapon in the fiscal armoury is interest rates, raising them would result in positive effects, unfortunately it also results in negative ones which means no tick in the box for the party which is in power when it happens.

We all know (and data confirms) that UKIP voters tend to be older, white, male, and ill educated.

But wanting to live in the past?

    Explains a lot.....

Anyway, to keep this thread on topic, the economic impact of winding back the societal clock a few decades would be horrific. The current national debt and ageing crisis with a much smaller population to support it would mean austerity and poverty for tens of millions.

    Why would they want that?

Interesting that over a third of Labour voters think things were better under Thatcher than shortly after the longest period of Labour government in British history.

    Yep.

There's little rational about nostalgia and rose tinted glasses.

Or it could be a fear of a future with 100-200 million people with no tradition of democracy, rule of law, trial by jury, religious freedom ..

Well what is superior about the western liberal tradition except of course to racists?

Of course, any concern about trivial about the need to import a massive proportion of our essential foods stuffs and energy without any obvious way of paying for them, is 'old fashioned'.

There is a lot of pessimism and unhappiness in the country - in Scotland its reflected in support for the SNP and in London oddly by support for the likes of Mayor Rahman (and oddly even Labour).

Odd that most of our young people don't wake up to how s****d they are - fewer decent jobs, no pensions to look forward to, can't afford a house on an average wage, paying high taxes to fund an ever rising national debt, paying taxes to fund generous entitlements for those over 50 which they won't ever get themselves.

Why many more of them aren't voting UKIP is beyond me!

    Too intelligent?

Which country are you talking about? Surely you don't seriously imagine that there will be 1-200,000,000 Muslim immigrants to the UK? That would mean 10% or more of all the Muslims in the world moving there. It doesn't seem very likely.

Yes, it was interesting to see that finally come out....

Like most fear based arguments, wholly irrational by comparison to the facts, but interesting none the less.

if there was free unfettered immigration into either UK or say Australia
what would your estimate of the number of people that would come over say the next 10 years
as an exercise you may divide them into muslims or non muslims if you wish?

what's your estimate of the number that would come if they were offered free access to the UK?
