Look at the XPS machines if you want something high end.

Problem is i have spent 1000s of pounds in last 2-3years buying online, refurbished and 2nd hand...now im just fed up...all i need is a decent laptop with support as i dont know even basic stuff like installing windowsetc

What exactly are you doing to have so many problems? I'm writing this on a £400 HP laptop that I bought nearly 5 years ago and have used pretty much every day since then. I don't treat it with kid gloves but I don't mistreat it either, to get through as many as you seem to you must be doing something to cause them to go wrong.

With a budget of £1000 and your record I'd buy a cheap laptop with a third of the money and keep the rest to pay for the next replacement.

Tell us what you mean by not starting, and answer NiftyDigits's question about
Brand name and full model number?
I would expect that people on this forum will be able to get you out of your "Urgent laptop needed" without spending £1000-1200 and recover your data too. Too many people think that they are not "Techie" but if they can follow written instructions then they will get a free solution, or a very minimal outlay at most.

Young people, alright, young men, seem to get through laptops quickly with broken keys and bent off power plugs a specialty, not to mentioned loaded to the gunnels with viruses. I did not encourage my son to have a lappy till he was about 22, till then it was military grade steel desktops.

My 2006 Dell Inspiron 6400 is still going strong. No need for military grade.

    As is my 6400. :D
Was given to me by a young'un (24 now), who had it when he started college in 2006.
He no longer has use for it, battery is original and still good for nearly 2hrs.

Do you need to work with any other businesses and if so what software do they use? Basically thinking of the difference between using windows or apple.

Even when software is 'compatable' there are still going to be glitches that need to be sorted out.

If you don't need to take the lappy out with you much then consider a 17 inch screen, it does depend on your eyesight too, but if you are using the lappy a lot a bigger screen will probably be more functional.

I've bought a few Dell's and am happy with the service. My current lappy is a 17 inch Inspiron which did have a HDD issue but Dell sent someone out to fix it for me (even though I had a RTB repair policy). Other than that the lappy has been fine (5 years old now). I put in a bigger HDD recently but only because I had filled up the old one with clutter.

A lot will depend on the nature of your business and what you actually want to use your lappy for. I wouldn't buy from PC World, you'll get a better deal online. When I bought my Dell lappy I found I was able to customise according to what I wanted the lappy for.

I've found free anti-virus to be perfectly adequate. As to back up, all you need is a portable external HDD and a backup programme - there are lots of good ones out there, set it up so it schedules back ups for the frequency you want. Have a browse here for backup options, including cloud backup http://www.majorgeeks.com/mg/sortname/back_up.html

I recently treated myself to a HP Chromebook £250, WOW. !

Lighting fast, no Windows or other MS products. Come with 100G of cloud storage for 2 years and then its $10 per year :)

Boots from cold in 18 seconds and Google Drive offers the full set of office apps like word and excel. comes with a SDD and virus / malware are not a issue at all :)

Far cheaper than a Apple and unless you want to do photo or video editing then its brilliant !

  • The problem with a Chromebook is that if you can't get an internet connection it is basically a doorstop.

All the apps work off line and documents sync back to the device so that is not correct.
