I'm sure it's been asked 1,000 times before, but just want to be sure I have 100% the best most up to date info.
Got someone coming to collect a car from me they won on eBay today £1.4k... Originally they wanted to pay Paypal but I have heard of a scam in which they say they never got the item, because they collected it. So I said no.
Then they said even friends and family. Again no.
Then I said cash. They said there unlikely to be able to get to the bak today.
So suggested a bank transfer.
Are they going to walk away with the car, ringing there bank on the way demanding the money back?
Thanks in anticipation

It is very unlikely they can revert a bank transfer but they might try.
Get them to sign the purchase, get someone to take a photo or two of the handover of the car and the paperwork, with both of you clearly identifiable in the photo. Ask for ID, take a photo of their driving licence. Should they want to ask their bank to revert the payment, you can present evidence of the purchase and their bank won't give them the money back.0 -

Thanks, I feel bad having to do all the checks but I've been scammed before so I know to trust no-one.
Thanks!!0 -
If in doubt (particularly for this amount) you could ask for cash.
14 x £100 notes (or 28 x £50 notes) would do it.This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -

Haha. The problem here is, and I almost understand it the bloke works 9 - 5 and can't get to a bank to withdraw that kind of cash.
It's me being the difficult one saying no to Paypal. Going for bank transfer with added security, just hope he's someone who understands and isn't freaked out by it all :rotfl:0 -

you are *not* being difficult at all. £1400 is on the low side for a cash sale, demand cash. If he wants to buy a car at that price he could and should have got the cash out in advance. Not getting to a bank is feeble; what about Saturday mornings, lunch times, some banks stay open late one evening, what about Post Offices, or just using a cash machine 3 days in a row, there's plenty of options, some people just cannot be bothered, and then try to make it sound like your fault! The questions that get the best answers are the questions that give most detail....0 -
I agree with the above. I'd not suspect a bank transfer normally, but for such a low amount, when cash would be far more normal, alarm bells would be starting to sound.
At the very least he can withdraw a couple of hundred pounds a day over a couple of days from bank machines. Being unwilling to do this sounds a bit odd.0 -
I wouldn't accept paypal, you have zero proof you gave the carDon't put your trust into an Experian score - it is not a number any bank will ever use & it is generally a waste of money to purchase it. They are also selling you insurance you dont need.0

I would speak to paypal and see what they would consider acceptable proof when the buyer needs to collect the item. Even if you accept cash it may be counterfeit.0 -
He's done a test transfer and that all went through instantly. My only worry is could he get this money he transfers back...
It's not a lot in the terms of a car, but to me... It's loads!
He also runs a very successful eBay account over 10,000 feedback and I have kept all the messages back and forth as proof.
Sound like enough?0
