Pays for a year but then gets 364 days refunded minus a £25 cancellation fee. Probably miles cheaper than paying for 1 days insurance with a short term insurer.

But he may not buy the van or may buy another so which vehicle does he insure?

Phone them tomorrow and add the van on just on case. If you dont buy it then you can remove it afterwards.

Dont forget it wont be taxed either. So you need to do that before you drive home.

  • Thanks for all replies !

I phoned the AA this morning, and have taken dead van off insurance, and added the one I am going to look at on Sunday. Cost me a £20 admin fee, but they did say that if I didn't end up buying the new van, just ring up to switch back to old van, and I will not have to pay the admin fee again..

That was very good of them. What is the chance of you having an accident in the dead van?

    No............
  • Some dealers offer "free" insurance with the car, usually 10 days or something. Less common with used motors but maybe worth asking.

DOC only allows you to drive other people's vans, the OP is buying the van on Sunday and so DOC wouldnt cover it given it will then be his.

A work around is to "borrow" it but this is clear fraud and the seller would have to be complicit in it

A commercial vehicle policy is highly unlikely to include cover to drive any type of other vehicle

Have you thought of just chancing swapping it over to the new vehicle with your current Insurer and pay any difference along with any admin charge?

On policies bought. direct with Axa you can log in and make changes online, including change the insured vehicle or temporarily add another vehicle. No admin fee for changes, though obviously extra premium for extra vehicle.

It might be worth finding out whether you can do this.
