Why ?. There was a stat bandied about on here recently that the richest 12 families in the UK have something like 40% of the total wealth of the UK. If we're going to talk about a truly fair system where each household contributes a similar proportion of their finances to the system, then 3,000 people (a heck of a lot more than 12 families), paying the same as the bottom 9 million actually sounds like their contribution to the common pot is significantly less than their share of the wealth "pie".
Based on that, assuming that stat is true (a dangerous one I admit as I don't know where it comes from), then yes, those people need to be paying more if we're going to have a truly equitable system.0 -

Why does it matter, some people or rich some are poor get on with it.
An equal proportion of wealth paid into tax would be everyone pay the same % of income. That is fair.
Going back to Mr Dyson earlier, would you suggest he pays his fair share in tax he is a high earner? But he employs thousands of people creates jobs that would not exist with out him etc etc etc.
Would you not suggest some one like that should be rewarded for dong so much good rather than being punished and having to pay a higher rate of income tax.
It is not a fair system"talk sense to a fool and he calls you foolish" - Euripides0 -
Considering that Sir Dyson is worth an estimated £3 billion, I think that he has been pretty well rewarded his efforts and successes, and that a few percentage points in either direction on the income tax rates would not change anything for him.0

Maybe so, but that does not make it fair."talk sense to a fool and he calls you foolish" - Euripides0 -

Work it through, if the rich pay less the rest pay more.
If the rest pay more they have less money to spend on vacuum cleaners.
If they spend less on vacuum cleaners, Dyson sells less, and makes less profits. Multiply it through the economy and then what...
If the poorer have to pay more then the poorer will need higher incomes to live. Dyson will have to pay higher wages and he will make less profit.
If everyone pays a small amount then services, law and order, education etc all get cut back. Without investment its then harder to have an economy that works. Private police forces paid for by the rich to avoid the desperate poor from stealing or worse from the rich...
Just saying its not fair and we shouldn't tax the richer in society would have a significant number of repercussions. Many of which would end up with the richer losing far more.0 -

I don't think youunderstand what I'm getting at.
The Lefties are saying that the current system is unfair because they are not paying enough. I am saying it is unfair because they are already paying too much"talk sense to a fool and he calls you foolish" - Euripides0 -
A graduated tax system is a sign of a civilised society (to my mind). A flat-rate tax just doesn't work on so many levels and it is correct that those of us who earn more contribute more (proportionately) than others.
I am speaking as a 40% tax-paying 'Leftie'!'I want to die peacefully in my sleep, like my father. Not screaming and terrified like his passengers.' (Bob Monkhouse).
Sky? Believe in better.

As I said earlier, someone at his level probably pays less as a percentage of his income that an employee within the 40% (or 45%) rate, which might be seen as unfair, indeed.
If he pays 40-45% then he is treated the same as everyone else in which case I hardly see how that is unfair.0 -

how do you hold a conversation, you must be one of those people who just ignore what is being said to them and just babbles crap back at the other person without listening to what is being said..."talk sense to a fool and he calls you foolish" - Euripides0
