Cordie, I just checked Great Railway Journeys as an example and the subtitle track is in the .ts file. I am grateful for everyones input but you are all seriously overestimating my present knowledge so is this one way I can proceed.
The series I want to save is not in HD so my first step is to download it on to several USB sticks not larger than 16GB. I can then transfer it onto a hard disc (I am not sure what a hard disc is) and I am presuming I somehow do this through my computer. I should then be able to play it on a media player unfortunately I don't know what this is either.
So does anyone here have the patience to keep trying to explain the procedure to me.0 -
Ok the only files you need are the .ts files
Plug in the Stick and follow the manual section 11 - 5(and 6) page 60 (in mine ) you can download it from here http://cdn.freesat.co.uk/freesat/freesat_website/content/downloadables/humax_foxsat_hdr.pdf
VLC is will play the files dowload from http://www.videolan.org/4.8kWp 12x400W Longhi 9.6 kWh battery Giv-hy 5.0 Inverter, WSW facing Essex . Aint no sunshine ☀️ Octopus gas fixed dec 24 @ 5.74 tracker again+ Octopus Intelligent Flux leccy

Thanks debitcardmayhem - I can't do anything with a USB stick at the moment as I don't have one larger 1GB but I do still have my manual so that is something I can follow at a later date.
If I use the VCL I am assuming that means I can only watch the programmes on a computer and as I only have a desktop that isn't really what I am looking to do. What I would really like to be able to do is watch them on a television set that isn't connected to the internet.0 -
Does your TV have a USB slot?
If it does, then you may be able to play the files directly from wherever you have stored them, although I haven't tried it myself and I suspect that the formats that can be played by default may not include .ts, so you'd have to try to convert them to an alternative acceptable format (no idea whether this would include subtitles though).
If there is no USB then you'd probably need to consider some sort of device that will stream video from your computer to your TV, I haven't done this so I'm not sure what solutions might be suitable and what technical challenges you would face.0 -

You could have a practice with your 1GB stick (must be empty) a 30 minute program is approx 0.9GB, or just record something for a few minutes.
Once on your memory stick you then need to insert into your PC, it will automatically appear on your screen, open it and you will see two files, its the large .ts file you want, you can delete the other.
If you want to store collectively on an external hard drive you need something like this.

Note other retailers and drives are available! Again connecting such to a PC it will appear and its just a case of dragging the files from the USB stick to the external hard drive.
As mentioned above if your TV has a USB socket you could try inserting the USB stick into it to see if the file will play, I'm assuming you want it to play on a different device to the one that your Humax is connected to?0 -
I wasn't aware that HD channels (BBC1HD/BBC2HD) were encrypted - is this true?!
Anyway, with the USB method, copy whatever fits onto a stick, then copy it off the stick onto your computer. Repeat....
Note that these files will be pretty big, so I hope your computer has plenty of disk space.
Now you have the option of converting the files to another format - this gives the possibility of making them smaller, but also make them playable on umpteen devices. It's time consuming, can be a bit technical and is very hard work for your computer, but can be worth it if you really want it. Do you have a PS3, XBox, AppleTV or any other fancy devices connected to your TV? Tablet or smartphone? Or as above does your TV or DVD player have a USB port? Handbrake is excellent for converting video formats.
OR - of course if you save all that stuff onto your computer, you can always copy it back to the stick, plug the stick into the Humax, and play it back there, with no conversion necessary...0 -
Yup by default all HD broadcasts in the UK are encrypted if they are recorded. It's to stop 'piracy' apparently...
Their is a patch for custom foxsat hdr firmware to remove the recording encryption for new recordings. But it can't remove it from existing recordings.Laters
