Question about Foxsat-HDR

I use a Foxsat-HDR to record programmes and I believe it is possible to then download these onto another device. Can anyone help me with what 'device' I need and would be capable of storing 52 hours of programming on it.
I realise that buying the DVD would probably be cheaper but the television version has subtitles which I would like to retain and the DVD doesn't have any.

You can actually change the firmware on the FoxSat HDR to act as a small mediaserver. So you don't actually need to transfer the shows to another device as long as you plugthe Humax into your network.

But if you want to transfer the programs to another device then you'll need to copy the .ts files over.
Not sure but think each file is a single recording including subtitles. Not 100% sure but you may need a program to combine the subtitles!! it's been a while since i used my FoxSat HDR.Laters

If any of the programmes you want to copy are bigger than 4 GB then you'll also need to be able to format the drive that you use as EXT3 as FAT32 won't allow a single file of that size. Which means you'll either need access to a Linux system or you'll have to download software to allow you to do it on a Windows system. As a clue to size, a single HD episode of Homeland is now too big for FAT32.
I also don't know about copying subtitles but I'd imagine the forum suggested will have threads about it.0 -
You need a 8GB USB Memory stick max, but you can only copy over non HD recordings, as HD recordings are encrypted.
Using a PC you can then transfer them collectively onto a larger external hard drive.
For future reference, anything you wish to keep/transfer record in SD only.
If you want to know the procedure let me know, it is a little time consuming.

I found that mine will support a 16GB USB stick but no bigger. That's enough for 8 or 9 one hour SD recordings. The USB port is behind the front facia which is hinged. It takes an absolute age to transfer.
The alternate firmware that allows network access was way behind current last time I looked but maybe the developers have updated it.

Having looked at the firmware link above it may well have been updated since I last used it. As doing the copies takes an age I think I'll be giving the updated firmware another go.0 -
Thanks for your replies and I know the next question I am going to ask is incredibly stupid but as I'm anonyomous here I'll ask - if I manage to put them onto a USB stick where can I play them back?0

VLC will play them on the PC for one or there are umpteen video conversion programs out there which will change them to play on tablets/phones/etc. I use MediaBuddy.
I tend to save TV series on hard disk and play them through a media player on the TV but there are very many ways to skin a cat. Once you have a digital version of a video the world is your lobster.0 -
It depends, if it is HD then you can't, they will only play on the HDR, if it's not then as suggested VLC.Thanks for your replies and I know the next question I am going to ask is incredibly stupid but as I'm anonyomous here I'll ask - if I manage to put them onto a USB stick where can I play them back?4.8kWp 12x400W Longhi 9.6 kWh battery Giv-hy 5.0 Inverter, WSW facing Essex . This is part V of a long running thread about the HDR and its modified software, it is very good, and it also allows the recording of HD programmes without encrypting, a web based interface , samba file sharing, streaming , ftp etc - https://www.avforums.com/threads/media-file-server-bundle-for-the-foxsat-hdr-release-4-part-5.1829374/4.8kWp 12x400W Longhi 9.6 kWh battery Giv-hy 5.0 Inverter, WSW facing Essex . The firmware from the first link is easy to install and use and is working well for me. It's a completly different from what I used in the past so far as I can see although I expect a lot of the core code is the same.
I'm not really interested in pulling HD video from the FoxSat as it's mostly old stuff that isn't available easily from web downloads that I get from mine and none of that gets broadcast on the HD channels anyway. It's interesting to know that it is possible though.0 -
It's the same s/w (different forums) , the one on AVforums has over 3500(spread over 5 parts) posts though so it is a bit time consuming
