So it appears that the freesat box is the issue? If only someone had said that at the beginning..... :)

Not really, if you genuinely are not going to be watching live TV and are worried about TVL visitors then just remove the dish or cut the cables outside the property.
  • that does not mean the TVL should be scrapped. it means the BBC needs to get better and refocus on educational programming.

I don't think the BBC has to provide just "educational" programming in order to fulfil it's PSB remit. I think the important thing to note is how the licence fee has allowed the BBC historically to produce experimental broadcasting which commercial channels would never take a chance with.

I do agree that the BBC should not be in direct competition with other broadcasters, but if few were actually watching the BBC (rather than the millions who do) I think there would swiftly be a case made for ending the corporation or reducing still further it's funding.

At the end of the day, I think the BBC provides far more value for money than Sky etc and I think it would be a loss to us all if Auntie were to be consigned to the dustbin or become so poorly funded that no reasonable service was possible.

As for TV licensing "enforcement", I have no opinion or experience of this, so I won't comment either way.

    Nobody said it did.

Either way, it is being done in your name, with your money. If you value fairness, justice or proportionality you really should take an interest.

As broadcasting becomes more and more diverse, the BBC will be more and more in the Catch-22 position of having to appeal to the mass audience to justify the Licence Fee, whilst claiming that it alone and uniquely can service the diminishing PSB niches (albeit by shoving the programming on BBC4).

i'm nearly a year now tvl free ... can honestly say i dont miss the tv at all, no regrets and no plans to ever go back to watching tv, in the time i got rid of my tvl i have purchased one new tv and been given a newish tv as well ... we now have 3 tv sets in our home, all of which are only ever used for catch up tv ( rarely though tbh ... maybe once /twice a month) and DVD's which we either borrow from friends or buy, i reckon we watch about 10 hours of tv a month ( all movies or documentaries) we have saved a fortune and look forward to saving more over the coming years ... one of the best advantages though i have found is that i dont understand any of the crap that gets talked about in work regarding some singer or dancer or what someone in a jungle has eaten ... that and the whole amount of time i now spend in my garden or chopping wood for my fire ... i was however very aware of the bias that people talk about with the BBC, between that and their obvious lack of dealing with pedophiles as they did for years i want nothing to do with such an organisation so wouldnt have one anyway

    much better life IMHO
  • Bravo! We're about 2 months tvl free and I can't see us ever going back to it.
Initially we were watching a fair bit of catch up but this is getting less and less now.
    Life's too short.

I'll be getting rid of sky in the new year. I thought that as I pay my tv license by DD I paid 6months ahead. Is this not correct? I distinctly remember when first paying my DD it was double for the first 6 months.
Hi Knackeredoldbat, that's exactly right, 6 months paid upfront by doubling the fee in those first 6 months.

I cancelled my TVL for the end of September, was due refund for the full 6 months + 1 month paid at start of October, but had 5 months refunded (even though they say full quarters only?). When we queried the refund, they sent out a new form (same as the original refund form), which I still haven't sent off (hubby keeps asking if I've sent it, which I haven't, but I really should!)

I suppose my point is (got there), they'll say they "usually" only refund whole quarters, when in fact they should be refunding every whole month? I will chase them, so will report back if any success :)

The issue is that the monthly payment scheme is layered on top of an underlying Licence. Therefore the refund will depend on unused quarters AND credit sitting on the account due to advance payments.

In normal operation, the monthly scheme works 6 months in advance followed by 6 months in arrears.
