virgin media - slow broadband connection

we are supposed to have 20 meg BB but its so slow a 56k dial up would be faster.
mr mob called virgin media today, weve been a customer of theirs (and blueyonder previous) for years. they wont/cant do anything about it and ask that we call a premium rate number charging 25p per minute for any queries regarding BB.
now we all know what they will say....'its your computer'. it most certainly is not, this is a brand new machine.
is anyone else having problems with VM? and specifically with their BB connection.
ours runs through an ethernet cable.

I use the prestel service.
My computer is equipped with a 1200/75 baud modem.
If I were you I would upgrade to using an accoustic coupler.

I had the same prob with my 20meg, cost me a fortune in phone calls, had 2 engineers come around, both stated it was a fault at VM end, lasted me 8 weeks, I found a solution on the broadband forum, to change my proxy manually, so for that has done the trick, ive had no problems since.
Open Control Panel Internet Options (or, in IE, pull down menu Tools and select Internet Options...).
Click on the tab Connections.
Click on button LAN Settings.
UNcheck Automatically detect settings.
UNcheck Use automatic configuration script.
Check Use a proxy server but ensure that the boxes are left blank.
Click on button Advanced:
In the row HTTP fill in the name and port number (8080) of your chosen web proxy server (see belfast's below). It is essential that you do not select port 80, even if your chosen server offers a proxy service on that port.
Ensure that the other rows are left blank.
UNcheck Use the same proxy server for all protocols.
In the Exceptions box enter: 192.168.*
Click OK.
Click OK to exit LAN settings.
Click OK to apply the changes and exit Internet Options

If anyone on the 20meg service with slow downloads would be so kind as to send them an email and maybe they'll get the finger out faster .

but dont forget that broadband internet is based on a PORTION of pipe you are sharing with the rest of your street. If you are in a highly populated area, maybe with flats as a classic example, at busy periods such as weekend mornings, all your neightbours are sharing your line and this slows it down. Also the further you are from the ISP site (not sure of the techie name), eventually the signal get weaker further down the line.
The broadband suppliers quote the size of line they connect you to, sadly the reality is you'll never get the full bandwidth due to the above.
I take it with 20meg you are not on wireless? My wireless like i am on now goes up and down if i have the microwave on, helecopters overhead, all sorts.
sorry if this is too obviousI never missed a payment :T , I paid off all my credit cards :T , I paid of all my loans :T , i have a work mobile :T - but am now "medium" credit risk0 -
You may be experiencing slower speeds because of the caps that virgin put in place between peak times, which I'm sure is 4pm to midnight.** Mummy to little Jenna born on 23/12/07 **
