What console......gaming newbie!

If not been in gaming for a while I'd go with the 360 or PS3 recommendation as well as the consoles and accessories can be had for a lot cheaper plus they have a huge back catalogue of games that can be had cheap. By the time the Xbox One/PS4 have a decent gaming library they're likely to be quite a bit cheaper. Aside from the lack of games, the PS4/Xbox One aren't that much of a jump from the previous generation as their hardware is surprisingly poor - I find it odd those going on about buying a PS4 for its better graphics when even a budget gaming PC can easily outdo it never mind a decent one.

Charming. Internet forums are about opinions, sorry if you don't agree with mine.
I can "have a clue". Its based on common sense and observations based on previous experience of 30 years.
The latest generation of consoles have sold more in the first year than any other (exception being the Wii, I think). There are huge numbers out there already.
I would be very surprised if the ps3 and Xbox 360 have any major "AAA" titles still coming out by this time next year. You normally get 12-18 months overlap before games stop being released on the old consoles. So we're just about there.
Sure, the original poster could buy a ps3/360 pretty cheap and have a great time working through the old titles (assuming single player games as the multiplayers will have very few people left). But its not very future proof. You'll be seeing those beautiful new games being advertised next year.... and they won't be available on the old consoles.
I stand by my point. I'd advise PS4 or Xbox one - PS4 having the edge.
No need to apologise.
My opinion was that you were chtting boolarx, so I stated it.
Even if AAA titles do stop being made for the previous gen, there is still a HUUUUUUUUGE catalogue. Just because they stop making AAA titles for previous gen doesn't render it obsolete. There's still a HUUUUUUUUUGE catalogue for PS2 and Xbox, you just need to look in your local Game store to see that.
Not everyone plays AAA titles, and there are plenty of AAA titles released on PS3 and 360 to keep anyone happy. Hell, there are still 50k people playing Black Ops on PS3, and that game is 4 years old!0 -
For me there's no real difference, as ive aged I only tend to play FIFA these days and they look and feel the same on both main consoles.0

tidus you didn't really respond to my post, and in my opinion you're living in the future. The next gen consoles are twice the price of the CURRENT (previous is PS2 and 'XBOX' to me!) consoles, have fewer games and do less.
My point, and this is for someone in OP's situation (been out of gaming for a while) is to buy a current gen one, where they will have STACKS of games to play, as well as all the 'media' stuff that the next gens can't do as of today, and it would be better value to do that now.
You seem to want to invest in the future, and buying games consoles isn't an investment!0 -

Ha, I've seen a few people say they bought a PS4/One as an "investment" during the past year. :rotfl: Did they think the console prices would go up? Or did they expect to charge people by the hour for the privilege of using their console?Q: What kind of discussions aren't allowed?
A: It goes without saying that this site's about MoneySaving.
Q: Why are some Board Guides sometimes unpleasant?
A: We very much hope this isn't the case. But if it is, please make sure you report this, as you would any other forum user's posts, to forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com.0 -

Have a quick look back at the original post.
The OP mentioned seeing amazing graphics on (presumably) TV adverts. They are looking at PS4/XBOX one, not last generation (unless "not actual gameplay footage"!). If that's want they want, they need the latest consoles.
They have not indicated if cost is a serious issue - if it is, then sure go last gen. I don't think £300 is a lot for a console which will (hopefully) have at least a 5 year lifespan.
They have not indicated any interest in multimedia capabilities - if they have, then yes at present last gen are still better but that will change with further updates. Personally, this is a non issue as all my consoles do is play games and the odd blu-ray.
Hence - PS4 or Xbox one!0 -

Think about it. If you're going to advertise your game, why wouldn't you use the best quality assets available?
If the best graphics are genuinely wanted, then the PS4/One are not the answer. If the graphics are secondary (and, personally, I still think some 360/PS3 games look great - I've just finished replaying Resonance of Fate for example), then the PS4/One are not the answer.Q: What kind of discussions aren't allowed?

Ah, good old anisotropic filtering, where would we be without it....
Of course high end PC's will have the best graphics. Regardless of what's shown on TV, the latest generation of consoles have better graphics than the previous one, and the differences will become more pronounced as time goes on.0 -
Got myself an Alienware Alpha a "PC console". Brilliant its the best of both worlds. Still needs some work but out preforms XB1 and PS4. Costs a little more but you end up paying less due to the games and no cost for online. Worth considering0

Don't forget mid-end PCs, though. Four-year-old £600 PCs still leave the PS4/One for dust.Q: What kind of discussions aren't allowed?
