They can give anyone a ticket for almost any reason they like.

That still doesn't mean any such ticket can't be defeated. ;)

Ok, so what I'm gathering is that:

    1) Cars have parked in all the surrounding spaces and so I haven't caused them financial loss.
    2) The space isn't big enough for my car, I paid for a parking space and was supplied one too small. Either the parking spaces are too small or BMW need to reclassify their vehicles.

I realise my parking isn't fantastic here, but I don't think its £100 bad.

The reality of the situation is that the two cars behind you have probably had to park at a bit of a 'non-compliant' angle, and they too have likely picked up a ticket each because of your overhang!

I am following this thread with interest, because I have a 22 foot van (which I use as a private vehicle having no other transport) and parking bays are generally 20 foot.

Are they? I struggle to park my Chrysler saloon car without overhanging a parking bay by at least a foot and it's nowhere near 20' long.

Well they vary. Apparently many roadside bays are so narrow the majority of cars can't get in them - and are likely to scuff and damage the tyres on the kerb by trying - a serious safety risk. Cars have been getting wider since these bay widths were set - the extra width being for safety crumple zones - something the Government should be encouraging instead of restricting with narrow parking bays.
Having a fairly wide van I generally put 2 wheels on the kerb where there is a wide pavement and a narrow road because I like to leave plenty of room for emergency vehicles to get past without slowing down. I have been doing this for many years without problems until I parked in Haringey behind Alexandra Palace and a traffic warden appeared to put ticket on. Fortunately I was in the van and he was surprised to see me get out before he could finish the ticket. I explained why I parked in that way, but he just muttered 'park properly' and walked off.

To be fair that is a bad and anti-social bit of parking, a cursory look shows that the back of your car takes up part of the two bays behind and the bay extends in front of your red line.

To be fair it would seem that the bays are excessivly short due to the paint being worn off at the front. No doubt the OP would have parked better had the lines been in one piece.

Having a van slightly wider than the average car, I generally put 2 wheels on the kerb where the pavement is wide and the road is narrow, because I like to leave plenty of room for emergency vehicles to get past without slowing down. I politely explained I parked that way for safety's sake to allow emergency vehicles to get past without slowing down. But he just muttered 'park properly' and walked off. I spoke to a local guy about it and he said the money they make from fines keeps our council tax down. Apparently the council tax on Buckingham Palace is less than the council tax on a 3 bed semi in other parts of England.

Another problem is with older multistory car parks. The bay widths are determined by the space between the concrete pillars. You usually get three bays between these pillars, but as been mentioned above, cars are getting wider and it's sometimes quite tricky to park and not scrape your vehicle against the pillar. Of course they could make the bays wider but that would reduce the car park capacity by a third.
