I can't fault them, other than on really minor issues like not being able to get paperless statements for the 123 credit card

I could swear I saw somewhere that they will imminently offer a paperless option for the 123 CC statements but can't lay my hands on it now and it's certainly not available yet. Quite annoying but not annoying enough to turn down the 3% cashback on petrol/travel, and 2% and 1% on other stuff :).

I love the 123 current accounts (of which I have a few as I love them), and when cash ISAs were still a viable option, Santander had some rather good ones.

As to CS - my view is that they are pretty much all the same. They all employ some duffers, and they all employ some rather outstanding people. The litmus test is how they deal with complaints if you ever have any reason to complain. Can't say I have been disappointed by any bank or building society when I had reason to complain. My local Santander Branch, which I only visit when I need a larger cash withdrawal (i.e. incredibly rarely), has a great bunch of people. They even gave me their direct local phone number, without me having to ask for it, in case I needed assistance.

The Santander flaming I have seen was either about the integration of Abbey National and A&L, or from people who had got themselves inter ever-spiralling overdraft situations. I initially came to Santander as an A&L customer and didn't have any migration complaints myself. I don't use loans and overdrafts, so can't comment on how it is to have one of those with them.

There's no other bank that would have paid me as much as Santander for my spending and spare cash (I do make the best of those 4 and 5% current accounts, too, before anyone asks)

Just been turned down for this account, at the end it says your monthly outgoings are more than your monthly net income, but thats not right, i put the right numbers down but am thinking its maybe because i chose household maintainace as the reason for applying, and not main or second current account.

The most common reason for "your monthly outgoings are more than your monthly net income" is that you used amounts with decimals. Just use full pounds only.

E.g. do not use £975.20, only state 975.

Of course you need to make sure your net income is at least as much as your monthly outgoings - - nobody will give you a current account if you declare a net negative balance in your application.
  • Yeah its a bit bizarre without an option of paperless statement on the 123 credit card

I asked them about it last September, and got back:

Santander currently does not provide the option to go paperless on our credit card accounts. This may be something that we look at introducing in the future.

I'm likely to get the same message as I sent them an enquiry the other day too haha
  • Hi

I have 123 and would recommend with the proviso:-

if you need to w/d from PO there is no facility

you need a mobile to receive security codes for online payment transactions

Cash back, good interest rate, nice large balance amount attracting the interest, internet access, small monthly fee, opportunity to get their 123 CC with cash back perks too (ensure you only use CC if you have the funds to pay and pay off in full by DD every month) & they waive charge for 123 customers

Good staff at branch and helpful on phone so far.

    Thanks for the reply.

I did only use £900 for instance and not £900.50.
The other thing which may have gone against it, is when asked how much per month will be payed in, i put £500 as this is the minimum is it not? which has to be payed in.
When the net monthly income is for example £900 and the net monthly outgoing is say £600, only £300 is left, so are they saying where is the extra £200 coming from.
Bit of a mess from my side of things.

The charge is waived only for the first year.
  • Sorry

if you are a 123 current account customer, then apply for their 123 CC, they have a £24 (ish) annual charge for the CC. but for the 1st year as you have a123 current account with them already, this is waived (well they credit you with £24 or whatever the cost is exactly). BUT only for 12 months
