Buying an iPhone 3GS --?
Options
Really miss my iPhone. Had the 4S until it was water damaged and I can't afford to buy a new one.
So thinking about going down to the 3GS - should I be able to use apps still on this version? Apps such as google maps, Barclays, talkford, general shopping type apps, and other general apps

Don't. The 3GS is really old now and won't run IOS7 let along 8. Some apps will run by quite a few won't and as time goes on more and more simply won't. You are also leaving yourself open to security issues, I certainly wouldn't do mobile banking on anything but the latest version and even that has issues as seen in the news this week.
If you can't afford to replace your 4S then consider going to Android or Lumia (Windows). The Moto G makes for an excellent sub £150 replacement and will run the latest version of Android.0 -

No, it's a bad idea. It won't run the newer versions of iOS, therefore will also not run some apps.
Look for a 4s as a bare minimum, preferably a 5.====0 -
iPhone 3GS is ancient by now... soon apps won't run at all on this model.0

No, no, and no again. There's a reason for the price difference between 3 & 4...why would you even ask?0

Apple do fixed price repairs, although they really just swap it for a refurb) Have you asked it they can repair it? I think its something like £150 for a 4S. If your going to spend £100 + on a new phone that may be an option0 -

A friend swapped a 3GS for a moto g around 5 months ago and he is absolutely delighted he did. One of his reasons for moving was that some apps were no longer available.0

To be honest i thought like the iphone 3G only the built-in apps worked
You can't download any app from itunes none work on the 3G so if they do work on the iphone 3GS then they won't work for much longer.Nobody is Perfect. I am Nobody, therefore I am Perfect.0
