You sure you need iPad only? There are Andriod ones which you can get in less.0

One more small question (told you there would be!):
Is there any mileage in getting a 1st gen ipad mini (more my budget) as opposed to the 2nd gen with regard to iOS 8 and app compatibility going forward?
Thanks
I've got the 1st gen ipad mini and have iOS 8.1 with no problems. Can't help with future compatibility with apps though. Someone with more knowledge might be able to give you a better answer. I suspect the problem will be when Apple stop doing upgrades for 1st gen mini, and who knows when that will be.0 -
John Lewis still have the ipad mini in stock for £199 with 3 year guarantee.

Also, Curry's have in stock for £199 with £20 off code taking it within your budget. Shown link for white but also in space gray. Looks as if you would have to make two separate orders to take advantage of the code.

TBH the first ipad mini was a bit of a gimmick in my opinion... it actually has the same chip as the iPad 2 (the A5 chip) so is technically running a pretty old spec although the actual model is quite a bit newer than the iPad2... the iPad Mini2 however runs the A7 chip - the most up to date chip at the moment being the A8 in the iPad Air2. I still think you should be looking at the mini2 if you can get them in your budget.0

I was able to connect my iPad2 to TV via adapter and HDMI cable when using OS7.
Since upgrading to OS8 this has not been possible due to Apple 'blocking' this facility.
A point to bear in mind when considering making a purchase.0 -
Thanks for all your replies everyone.
Turns out that I've been offered some pretty major help towards the costs of 2 ipads from the grandparents so my potential budget has grown to around £280 each maximum (with us contributing around £100 each).
I can get an Ipad Air 1 for around this mark on Amazon but Ipad Mini 2 is around £239 mark. I'd rather get the mini for the lower price but not sure if these can do the same tasks as the Air with the only difference being the screen size? Really tempted by the Air but the price scares me! They have 10" generic Android tabs at the moment so would the 7.9" screen on the mini feel like a step backwards??
Sorry for rambling, helps to type it here to get it straight in my headIn deep...0 -
Try and pop into a shop and compare the size of a mini against a 10" tab and see how you feel.
What is it that is driving you towards Apple?
Nothing wrong with it just curious as your kids have a different OS experience at the moment.0 -

That's exactly what we intend to do this weekend. The local big Tesco has a good selection.
Kids use Ipads at school quite a lot and some of their friends have one at home. We're almost always skint so they've had cheap Android tablets up until now which in my opinion are fine, especially the 10" ones that they have. It's just that they've always wanted an Ipad in some form so would like to finally get them something they've always wanted for a changeIn deep...0 -
ipad Air1 & ipad mini2 are EXACTLY same in terms of capability.
The only difference is screen size. So if the size suits worth going for mini2.0 -
This is what I would have as the deciding factor...
... what do they currently use their 10" tablets for?
a) general surfing and gaming whilst chilling out on a sofa/bed with tablet in hands
or...
b) tablet propped up on bedside table etc to allow 'no hands' viewing of videos etc
Unless they are mostly doing b then I'd go with the Mini.0
