Plus, the 'hubzy' thing grated on me :rotfl:

I misread it as huzby (as in huzbeast) :rotfl:
  • This thread is very aptly titled. I can't believe all the lack of festive spirit there is.

People with irrational dislike for xmas due to religious association... get a grip, please. I'm an atheist, my whole family aren't religious, except for the elderly, and we all celebrate xmas, you know why? It's a designated time of the year when everyone's set free from their real-life commitments and allowed to enjoy anything and everything.
    I can't add up.

Yes, to snipe at someone for having the gaul to bring Jesus or the church into a discussion about Christmas was a bit odd! People are free to believe or not believe whatever they wish, but to say Christmas is nothing to do with Christianity makes no sense at all.
    .

Don't rise to it, m'dear.. there's one or two belligerent atheists on this thread who are itching for a bit of heated-argument.gif

But it's not mandatory to join in and enjoy everything and everything.

    I actually don't dislike Christmas.

I hate the fact that it starts before I've even put my summer frocks away.

I hate the fact that supermarkets are full of people who are apparently unable to understand shop closing times and feel the need to buy massive quantities of food that will go straight in the bin on 27th December.

I hate the fact that my local pub is full of drunken idiots who clearly have no idea how to hold their drink and how to behave in pubs, treading on your toes and spilling beer down your neck.

I like buying gifts for my (small) close family and friends.

I like taking my baby sis and my niece out for the day to do some Christmas shopping, have a lovely lunch and a girly day out.

I like visiting my family (OH's live too far away) on Christmas morning to exchange gifts.

I like cooking Christmas lunch (although we usually eat around 6pm) for just us two.

I just can't understand why some people (including you ;)) seem to think it necessary to career around the country visiting people and trying to keep everyone happy whilst exhausting themselves.

Why would it be compulsory to buy into so-called Christmas spirit? That is the line peddled by the big supermarkets etc who seem to be trying to convince people they must spend a fortune to have the mythical perfect Christmas.

I'm an atheist too so don't buy into the churchy side of it all. But neither do I subscribe to the much bigger non-religious aspect where people are spending money buying people rubbish they neither want nor need. The shopping spendfest is absurd and not everyone's idea of enjoyment is eating and drinking themselves to a standstill.

We are more than capable of enjoying 'anything and everything' but we don't need to be told when and where to do so by the corporate Xmas juggernaut. As for spending time with relatives, not bloomin' likely!

I guess maybe not if you are in certain professions such as police & other emergency services. ;)

And I doubt homeless people would think they had been "set free from their real-life commitments" to be "allowed to enjoy anything and everything" about Christmas.

For some families and some people, yes, that's what it feels like. It's lovely and nobody should begrudge it!

I'm working nights over this Christmas, I'm not planning to start raining on everybody else's parade by banging on about it, shift workers are pretty good at coming up with their own ways and times to celebrate. Didn't you used to be one?

Not shifts exactly, but regularly did BLD (breakfast, lunch, dinner). Used to do extra even when I switched to a 9-5 role because I enjoyed it and it gave others that wanted to be off a chance to be off!

My sister is working (a mixture of 12 hour night and day shifts) over xmas too, and new year.

There are quite a lot of professions that will be working. Recovery drivers, care workers, lorry drivers, security staff, hotel and hospitality staff, motorway service staff, highways agency staff, armed forces, solicitors, translators, IT staff, graphic designers (yes really. My BIL will be working from 4am on xmas morning on a major client's website for their xmas sale going live).....................
