Going to a birthday party, asked to donate to their charity, told £ minimum expected donation, no presents, fair enough, just two questions it is not my usual charity/charities which I donate to so as it is expected should I(I guess so) and why say minimum surely a donation is a choice not an order?

Strange. Donations to a charity are not unusual, but to make it compulsory is.Member #14 of SKI-ers club
Words, words, they're all we have to go by!.
(Pity they are mangled by this autocorrect!)0 -
in those circumstances yes I would donate to the charity of their choice (unless for some reason I disagreed with the ethics of the charity nominated) but I wouldn't necessarily donate the amount suggested.0

I wouldn't say they made it compulsory, well , not sure, because to be told minumum donation and the box will be at the entrance and this is the charity I support therefore the money will be going to that one then uhm yes?
I mind and don't mind:), mind in the sense of why do I have to when it is not my charity and don't mind in the sense that at least I do not have to worry about what present to get and whether it will be what they wanted, what they want is for the guests to donate to their charity....0 -

No, have nothing against their charity, just not the one I donate and support to, how would I be able to not donate the amount suggested?0 -
I knew someone who had a birthday bash every year and he always asked for no presents but to send donations to his chosen charity instead. However he did not demand presents or minimum donations!
Is the mimimum amount the sort of amount you would have spent on a present? I would just give the equivalent amount, I think.

So long as it is £20 plus;)0 -

If I was going to spend £20 on their present then I suppose I wouldn't mind. But it's rare that I can spend that amount of money on one person so they'd probably just get a tenner off me and if they don't like it, well... they can lump it

Ican spend £20 plus on a present but it is always that cost originally and I have got it in the sale for 50/70% off and they are none the wiser;)0 -
You don't have to do anything if you don't want to.
If you don't want to donate, then just walk past the box and if you don't mind donating, then put the amount you'd usually spend in an envelope. Suggested amount is irrelevant.
If anyone was so rude as to ask at a party where their present was, then complain you hadn't spent enough, then you wouldn't be friends for very long. This donation business is no different.
I'm guessing there's not going to be bouncers at the door turning people away if they fail to make the grade? All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.
Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.0
