    3. Huge metal cages full of food blocking the aisles making it impossible to get trolleys to go through complete aisles and woe betide any two people walking in opposite directions!
OK. I know I shop late, but seriously, Tesco (who are the worst for it) if you have a cage, unpack it. Do not use the aisles to store your caged, inaccessible food. This is what the back of your stores are for.

If they did that then they wouldn't be able to restock as quickly. Having more staff wouldn't help either as they would still have the same number of cages on the floor and the prices would have to go up. They only really open these stores that late because it is cheap to do, if they had to make their night shift less productive to do it then they would just close earlier.
  • BOGOF items but only one item left on the shelf.

20 checkouts in the store but only 2 open at peak times.

People paying a £4.75 bill with every last 50p 10p 20p 5p 2p etc they have when you can clearly see the £5 note in their purse/wallet.

That's what the self service tills are good for- getting rid of loose change. My oh only shops with notes so I end up with tons of loose change.

You forgot granny on her zimmer frame! As most supermarkets have a cafe, why not let the sensible person with the list (ie. a woman) go around the aisles while the familial hangers-on wait out of the way with a cup of tea in the cafe, to be collected at the end. I suspect the aisles would be almost empty as a result, mum would be calm, kids and granny would have been able to have a nice chat and dad wouldn't have been nagged at at all :) Oh yes, and the final bill would probably be lower, even allowing for the cost of the cups of tea since there wouldn't be endless hands picking up impulse buys and dropping them in the trolley.

    Result!

Well done... sexist and ageist in one post!

[*]"But can't you check out the back?" believe me if I hadn't already checked 3 times in the last 30 minutes for 3 other customers I'd check again. Often I did anyway, it was easier than arguing.

I used to get that when I worked in a charity shop. I used to pretend to have look but people didn't seem to understand that we only sold things that people gave us...

"do you have any prams or wedding dresses?"
    "sorry, no"
    "are you sure"
"I don't think so" (I think I'd notice something as big as that in the back room - you wouldn't be able to get in it)
    "can you have a look?"
"yes, I'll have a look"...sticks head through door and chats with person in back.."no, sorry, we definitely don't have any.."

[/LIST]I also saw a department manager get reprimanded by the store manager for spending too much time tackling a thief instead of sorting out the bananas (actually, from an economic point of view, the lack of bananas for an hour lost the store more money than a drug-addict trying to steal a TV, which did happen pretty much every day.)

Ahhhh, memories. I don't miss working there, really.

When I worked in the IT department of a well known supermarket, I had a look to see how many bananas the local store was selling. I ended up wondering where all the baboons were hiding. The store sold a greater weight of bananas than anything else!

I was in Lidl at the weekend with a trolley full of stuff. Everyone else in the queue also had a trolley full and a woman was weaving in and out of the queue, holding a couple of pieces of fruit, hinting that she would like to "push in" with her two items.

Being a [STRIKE]mug[/STRIKE] kindly soul, I said "Oh, go on then" and gestured for her to go in front of me (She didn't appear to speak English as this point). As soon as she got in front of me, she waved her arms about and shouted "Mum, mum" to another woman, who miraculously appeared with two baskets filled to the brim!

I had to laugh at her bare-faced cheek and I told her to go and queue like everyone else. She wasn't very happy though!

I was once in a queue and the woman behind me hit me with the trolley twice so I looked back and gave her a wide eyed 'why are you doing this look' but she kept doing it!

One of my mum's friends, if anyone hit her from behind with a trolley, would very loudly say "Love, no matter how hard you try that is not going to fit up my !!!!." They generally backed off after that :D

Yes very good for emptying your pockets/purse of lots of loose change and at the self service tills I wouldn't complain as I do it.

Anyone noticed how the supermarkets return the favour though by dropping lots of small change out of the self serve when you do pay with a note??? I'm sure thats not intentional!:D
