Use the backup feature in the phone and erase all content

It was switched on already and the contact information in my gmail account is what was backed up 3 years ago when I first got the phone - so no wonder I lost most of the contacts when deleting the account.
The calendar info does not include anything that I have put in over those three years either. I really need to make sure that I save that stuff somehow before resetting the phone.
As long as I know that the Outlook sync isn't going to overwrite it all I could give that a go?0
