If your hesitant to use your credit card in purchasing items online, I suggest you pay through PayPal. This way, you have the option to use either your funds through your bank account or your credit card (without having to disclose your credit card information when purchasing since you only have to link your credit card through Paypal).

I can't think of any way that is more secure than this.

Thanks so much for the person who opened this thread! :D I've been hesitant in applying for a credit card because of all the hassles and risks.. at least now I have sources that'll help me do things right once I've applied for one of my own.
  • I am now a debt-free-wannabee.
But its going to take a long time!

    Please could someone advise me.

Looking at my Equifax credit report it has listed almost every credit card ive ever owned, but im sure that ive cancelled the cards when no longer needed.

The equifax report says the status of these cards is 'settled'.

Does this mean the accounts are still open??

Some cards havent been used for over 5 years but my number of 'financial associates' still includes a long list of cards.

I think this is damaging my credit rating as ive been refused a new balance transfer.

    Thanks in anticipation

No, "Settled" means closed. They'll stay on your report for 6 years from the "Settled Date".

Settled cards being on your report for 6 years doesn't affect your credit rating. A negative payment history on recently settled cards may have an impact.

  • Thanks Canny Jock
I was worrying that id got to call all of the card providers to close the accounts
Ive checked may payment history and its not too bad.
Maybe i tried the wrong kind of card
    Thanks again
  • Has anyone successfully challanged wrong information on their credit report and had it changed?

My credit report holds information aboout me that is not true but they are resisting to make changes; the problem is the company they claim that registered the debt has gone bust so I am in "limbo land" so to speak.

Does any one know how to proceed in this regard?

I joined Experian and they did a great, really indepth report. You can cancel before the month is up and pay nothing too!
  • Just wondering if anybody could help please!???

I tried to apply for an additions direct account which has not been accepted but had a little trouble trying to get one! When I spoke to additions about the problem for not accepting me they said it was because there was still something running at an old address numbered 7! I lived there 14 months ago and have nothing running there still as I have long moved! When i got my equifax report it said settled for accounts that i had closed. But in the address number 7 it had 2 accounts an o2 phone contract and virgin media which said 'up to date' and it looked like there was yellow circles for every month last year when I never lived there! Ive spoken to virgin media and they said that the account was closed!!! Does anyone know what I can do about this problem as I have a lot of trouble getting credit when I have a good credit!! Is this the reason i keep getting knocked back! Any help or response on this matter would be brilliant thanks! jane

Letters of complaint to Virgin and O2 are your way forward. They should be able to remove the accounts from your credit file completely. You need the people that report to the credit agencies to make the changes.

  • Ladies and Gents, It makes n o odds what Experian or Equifax tell you. You need to find out if National Hunters Limited have you marked. Its a Micky Mouse organisation who think they are like Special Forces, undercover. They work to all of the major Banks and Building Societies, but those banks etc wont ever admit it. They are owned by Experian but strangely enough will charge you a tenner for your won DATA. Look them up Google National Hunters Limited Experian makes $462m profit in first year as independent ...
24 May 2007 ... Experian said it could spend as much as $1.5bn on acquisitions this year, ... As part of plans to diversify the business, Experian has made ...
